Why is urine green? Is it a symptom of an infection? Can the green color of urine be related to the diet and consumed isotonic drinks? Is it worth doing some research? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What affects the green color of urine?

Hello. Recently, one of the strangest situations in my life happened to me. Well, while using the toilet in the morning, I noticed that my urine was green. Never before had I even heard that urine could be green at all. I know that people who drink a small amount of water have more or less yellow color of urine (error) but green urine it is completely new to me.

I am asking for some information, what could it mean? Is this a sign that an infection has developed in my body? For some time now, vegetables have become the basis of my diet, although I will eat something sweet from time to time. Recently, I have also returned to regular training (4 times a week). After each of them I drink a lot of isotonic drinks (some of them are green / lime green), although I also drink a lot of fluids on a daily basis. Could unusual urine color be a result of this? Should I do any research?

I don’t know what to think about it, in general I feel okay. Please answer me, because the whole situation makes me a bit stressed. I’m only 20 years old. Thank you for your response. Regards.

The doctor explains the causes of the green color of the urine

Sir, green color of urine it happens extremely rarely, but as it usually results from the diet used. Eating large amounts of vegetables, most notably asparagus or spinach, can manifest itself green urine. You shouldn’t be concerned about such a state of affairs, if the situation was a one-off and you could associate it with the consumption of the vegetables I mentioned earlier.

Consuming larger amounts of green beverages can also affect the color of your urine, as well as other foods that contain green dyes. Certain medications are also said to be able to turn the urine green, including propofol, a common anesthetic drug.

Unfortunately, apart from the causes that are harmless to the body, it is necessary to take into account various disease states that can affect the color of the urine, giving it a green color. Such conditions include inflammation of the urinary tract, inflammation of the prostate gland, and inflammation within the kidneys, including those caused by blue pus. In the case of inflammation of the lower urinary system, especially of the bladder and urethra, apart from the green color of the urine, you can also observe hematuria, fever, burning around the opening of the urethra during micturition, pollakiuria characterized by frequent visits to the toilet and passing small amounts of urine, and lower abdominal pain.

If the infection takes place in the upper part of the urinary system, and therefore mainly in the kidneys, acute pyelonephritis should be taken into account, which is characterized by high fever, severe back pain in the lumbar region, especially when shaking this area, and sometimes by hematuria. Ureterolithiasis can produce similar symptoms, but they are due to blockage of the urine outflow and not to the presence of bacterial infection and inflammation. I suggest that you visit your family doctor to start appropriate diagnostics and then treatment.
