Eyelid twitching – the most common causes
Involuntary eyelid twitching is caused by contraction of the eye muscle and is common but sporadic. Usually the direct cause is fatigue or stress. Convulsions usually disappear after a few minutes.
The most common causes of twitching eyelids are:
- chronic stress,
- fatigue,
- intense physical effort,
- lack of sleep,
- excessive amount of coffee or alcohol drunk,
- smoking,
- deficiency of magnesium, calcium, potassium, vitamin B1,
- adverse effects of certain medications.

Usually we feel a twitching of the upper eyelid, but sometimes it is accompanied by a twitching of the lower eyelid. The seizure usually lasts for a few minutes. When should eyelid twitching be alarming?
Common causes of eyelid twitching are eye diseases, including keratitis, blepharitis, uveitis, corneal erosion, dry eye syndrome, and congenital glaucoma.
It happens that bouncing eyelid can be a symptom of very serious neurological diseases, such as:
- multiple sclerosis,
- facial nerve palsy,
- Tourette’s syndrome,
- various types of dystonias,

How to treat eyelid twitching?
Treatment for a twitching eyelid depends on the immediate cause. The most common cause of bouncing eyelids, occurring without additional symptoms and spontaneously resolving, is magnesium deficiency. Simple home methods that will significantly increase the quality of life are also helpful. You should take care of the proper length of sleep, reduce stress, give up coffee, alcohol and energy drinks.
