What might an increased CRP in pregnancy indicate? Why is the result elevated? Could a high CRP indicate a developing infection? Is the CRP result a cause for concern? What additional tests are worth doing? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What does elevated CRP indicate in pregnancy?
Good morning, I have a question regarding high CRP in pregnancy. I did this test this week when I was five months pregnant, but CRP score is elevated. I don’t have a follow-up appointment for a while and my increased CRP in pregnancy worries me a lot. The results showed CRP at the level of 300, which according to the information I found is very high. However, there is a lot of conflicting data, so I would like to know what does increased CRP in pregnancy mean? Is such high CRP in pregnancy the result of some infection?
I did not notice any symptoms, I had a cold, but it was almost a month before the examination and I am now cured. Is high CRP in pregnancy a result of this cold? I read that elevated CRP in pregnancy can be associated with various diseases that could infect my baby and it made me terribly upset because I don’t know what should happen now. With such an elevated CRP during pregnancy, should my doctor order any additional tests? Is high CRP in pregnancy dangerous for the fetus or can it threaten the pregnancy? Please let me know if, in accordance with normal CRP my high CRP in pregnancy is cause for fear and should i see my doctor sooner?
The doctor explains what high CRP means in pregnancy
CRP – C-reactive protein is the so-called acute phase protein, the increase of which occurs in inflammation. It is produced in the liver and in the arterial wall under the influence of inflammatory factors. Determination of CRP in blood is a commonly performed test. It allows you to confirm the suspicion of inflammation, to evaluate the effectiveness of current treatment, and to assess the cardiovascular risk. Normal values are within the range of 0,08–3,1 mg / l. The synthesis and secretion of CRP is highly dynamic. CRP concentration can increase significantly during the day.
It matters how elevated it is CRP level in the blood. CRP below 40 mg / l is usually a symptom of mild inflammation, viral infection and is also seen in pregnancy. A slight increase in CRP concentration can be observed in gingivitis, periodontitis, in smokers and obese people. Bacterial infections usually result in an increase in CRP as high as 200 mg / l. The reasons for higher blood CRP concentrations, up to 500 mg / l, are e.g. severe bacterial infections. We observe high CRP concentrations in neoplastic diseases, connective tissue diseases, heart attacks, and kidney failure.
Significant increase in CRP we observe in the postoperative period, in acute pancreatitis, enteritis. CRP concentration is a non-specific marker of inflammation severity. This means that it is not a specific disease. In order to find the cause of the increased inflammatory parameters, it is necessary to perform a more extensive diagnosis depending on the clinical picture, the suspected and the most probable cause of this condition.
Please consult the test results with your doctor in charge of your pregnancy. The doctor, after collecting a complete interview and examining the patient, will decide on further treatment. The accompanying symptoms and the results of other blood parameters are important. If necessary, the doctor will perform the necessary diagnostics and implement appropriate treatment. Depending on the result of the examination, the doctor may order, inter alia, blood re-tests, urinalysis and urine culture as well as vaginal smear.
