What does the abbreviation BI-RADS 3 indicate in mammography? What does this abbreviation mean? Does this abbreviation mean a benign change in the breast? Is this wording in the description of the study a cause for concern? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What does the abbreviation BI-RADS 3 indicate?
Hello, I am 35 years old and I would like to ask about breast examination, and more precisely to mark the result. A few months ago, a cyst was found in my left breast, the lesion was not large, about XNUMX centimeters, but the gynecologist decided to remove the cyst due to the fact that I was at risk of developing breast cancer, because my grandmother had breast cancer late detected. From the moment of the operation, I am under the constant care of a specialist doctor, I perform checkups, additionally I manually examine the breasts myself.
Recently, a gynecologist ordered a mammography with sonomammography, I received the result, but I have not shown it to the specialist yet, in the description of my mothers abbreviation BI-RADS 3, it is also written that the picture has no obvious pathological changes. What does BI-RADS 3 mean? If it is in the description that there are no serious pathological changes, should I understand that BI-RADS 3 is also a change, but in a mild course? This wording worries me because I don’t know exactly what it means. There are a few days left to the visit, but I would like to know now what BI-RADS 3 means?
Should I get any additional tests, I am considering MRI just to be safe. Please reply.
The doctor explains the meaning of the abbreviation BI-RADS 3
Madam, the BI-RADS rock is a scale created by the American Radiological Society that classifies changes visible in ultrasound or mammography, and at the same time offers a proposal for further treatment with recommendations for patients. The BI-RADS scale includes categories from 0 to 6. BI-RADS 0 requires additional imaging tests to be able to make a complete diagnosis. In turn, BI-RADS 6 stands for diagnosed and histopathologically confirmed breast cancer. BI-RADS 3 indicates a lesion that is most likely benign, although the risk of malignancy is around 2 percent.
It may be a complex cyst, fibroadenomas or microcalcifications. In most cases, a follow-up examination after 6 months is recommended. For women with elevated risk of developing breast cancer core needle biopsy is recommended. The collected material is then subjected to a histopathological examination by a pathologist. The doctor, by examining the microscopic structure of the collected lesion, is able to determine whether it is a benign or malignant tumor. You wait about 2 weeks for the test result.
I believe that in your case such a test will be ordered by your attending physician. There are no indications that you should perform any tests on your own at this time, the more so that in a few days you will have an appointment with a specialist.
