What does an enlarged uterus indicate?

Good day. Last week I was doing a routine ultrasound examination and I was a bit worried about the result I got, namely enlarged uterus. I am 29 years old, I have never been pregnant, and so far I have not had any serious health problems, so the enlarged uterus in the test results worried me a lot and I would like to know what an enlarged uterus means? I only read that an enlarged uterus may be a symptom of pregnancy, but I am not in this one because I use hormonal contraception on a permanent basis, so it is unlikely.

Therefore, I would like to know what they are causes of an enlarged uterus? Could this result mean that I do have some health problems that I am not aware of? It worries me because I had plans, however getting pregnantand now I was afraid that it might be difficult because I have some defects in the uterus. I will be very grateful for pointing out what an enlarged uterus is and what it can mean. If I go to the gynecologist with these results, will I immediately refer me to some treatment for this enlarged uterus, or is it just the basis for further tests? I am asking for help because I am very nervous about this diagnosis.

The doctor explains the causes of an enlarged uterus

Usually routine transabdominal ultrasound it is not the examination of choice for uterine imaging. Therefore, if the radiologist suspects such a suspicion, the best solution is to see a doctor or a doctor specializing in gynecology. During such a visit, the specialist will be able to examine the size of the uterus in a two-handed examination and more precisely in Transvaginal ultrasound. On this basis, the doctor will be able to tell not only if the uterus is actually enlarged, but also to give its exact size, find other abnormalities, and perhaps even find the cause of the enlarged uterus.

However, if the ultrasound does not confirm the cause of the enlargement of the uterus, the gynecologist may order other diagnostic tests, e.g. CT of the pelvis. Nevertheless, I would recommend a pregnancy test – the risk of pregnancy is very small, but 1-9 / 1000 women using oral contraceptives correctly may become pregnant.

The causes of uterine enlargement, apart from pregnancy, include uterine fibroids or adenomyosis (usually these pathologies are also accompanied by troublesome pains in the lower abdomen during menstruation), polycystic ovary syndrome, atypical endometrial hyperplasia, premature ovarian failure. In addition to the radiological image, the enlarged uterus may also show symptoms such as: disorders of the menstrual cycle, palpable mass in the lower abdomen, anemia, fatigue, weight gain, cramps in the lower abdomen, constipation, frequent urination, urgent need to urinate, pain during intercourse.

Whether there will be any problems getting pregnant depends on the cause of uterine enlargement. Only a gynecologist can answer the exact question of how it affects the reproductive potential, after finding out what is the reason for the enlargement of the uterus. Until this is confirmed, no conclusions, especially negative ones, should be drawn.
