What does lower abdominal and back pain indicate? Are such pain complaints related to each other? Can back pain and lower abdominal pain be a symptom of serious medical conditions? What tests should be done in this direction? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What do abdominal pain and back pain indicate?
Hello and welcome. I am 36 years old, I have no major health problems, but for some time my stomach and back hurt a lot. This is especially strange to me because stomach and back pain they occur at the same time and I have no idea what the cause is or if I should worry about it. What does abdominal and back pain mean? Can these symptoms be related at all, and if so, why? Abdominal pain occurs in the lower abdominal area, but it is not a stomach pain, nor is it a menstrual issue. On the other hand, my back hurts at the same height, a bit around my kidneys.
Could stomach and back pain be a symptom of some more serious disease? I don’t know what to think about it, and most importantly – what to do with this problem. If I have abdominal and back pain, should I do any specific tests? Until now, I was healthy, so I didn’t pay much attention to preventive examinations, but I didn’t have any stomach or back pain before. I am asking for help and tips, because I am starting to worry and I have no idea what abdominal and back pains may mean in a woman.
The doctor tells you what may be the cause of abdominal and back pain
Abdominal pain in a woman it can have many different causes and can be caused by:
- cystitis – usually accompanied by more frequent urination, burning sensation during micturition or blood in the urine, may also be accompanied by general symptoms such as fatigue, fever. It is usually diagnosed by symptoms and by a general urine test and culture, treatment is antibiotic therapy;
- nephrolithiasis – pain may occur in the lower abdomen, groin or lower back, most often unilaterally and is colic in nature, it is associated with the passage of deposits through the urinary tract. It can also manifest as haematuria, sometimes requiring hospitalization, for example if you have fever or hydronephrosis. For diagnostics, imaging tests are used to visualize the presence of deposits in the urinary tract, including abdominal CT scan or ultrasound, which allows for the diagnosis of nephrolithiasis;
- appendicitis – the pain applies especially to the right lower abdomen, it is also accompanied by decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, the occurrence of fever. Pain is strongest when palpating. Diagnosed by imaging studies and laparoscopic surgery is the treatment of choice;
- endometriosis – pain occurs periodically, before and during menstrual bleeding, and usually affects the lower abdomen, does not radiate to the back;
- pelvic inflammatory disease – affects the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, usually manifested by pain in the lower abdomen, there may also be abnormal uterine bleeding (beyond the period of menstruation, more intense bleeding than usual), pain when touching the cervix, vaginal discharge.
Depending on the laboratory and imaging tests performed, the cause of the pain can be found, while the description of the pain itself can only be used to suspect, and not confirm the diagnosis.
One of the basic tests is ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, thanks to which you can find out the cause of pain.
