What is Romberg’s Trial? What does the examination look like? What does Romberg’s positive test show? Is the study related to any serious health problems? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What does a positive Romberg test result mean?

Good morning, I am a 42 year old man and recently I have problems with concentration, also the coordination of movements. It’s not that I pass out, but sometimes I feel dizzy for no reason at all. An internist recommended a visit to a neurologist and an examination for Romberg’s attempts. There is still some time until my visit to the neurologist, but I would like to get some more information about that.

What exactly is Romberg’s rehearsal? What is the course of such a study? What is positive Roberg test? Are there any serious health problems associated with it? Are they curable? Will I have any major surgery? I don’t want to worry my wife, but I’ve been a nervous wreck myself lately – especially because of my ailments. I try to rest more, but it doesn’t help. That is why I decided to write and ask for help in explaining the above issues to me.

Thank you in advance for providing detailed information about Romberg’s positive test, because I would not like to look in other, less proven sources. Regards.

The doctor explains what Romberg’s positive test is

Ladies and Gentlemen, you asked a lot of questions, unfortunately I will not be able to answer all of them, mainly due to the fact that you did not provide basic information about your health condition and the medications that you regularly take. The Romberg maneuver is part of the basic neurological examination, it is used for static equilibrium assessment. You do not need any specialized apparatus to carry it out.

During the test, the examined person stands straight with his feet together and his eyes open, and the upper limbs are to be lowered, although some doctors ask to raise the limbs in front of him (as if to squat). If there is already imbalance at this time, even in the form of unsteadiness, the test cannot be performed and it is necessary to suspicion cerebellar syndrome, vestibular or damage to the motor cortex.

If there is no imbalance, the examiner asks the patient to close their eyes. At this point we are talking about Romberg’s attempt. If, after closing the eyes, the doctor notices an unstable posture in the patient, the test is considered positive. In such a situation, posterior cord sensory incoherence is suspected. Patient observation should last 30 seconds.

Reasons for Romberg’s positive test may be different. A positive result very often indicates the presence of neurodegenerative diseases as well as dementia, diabetes and uremia. Drug and heavy metal poisoning should also be considered. As I mentioned before, I am unable to answer your other questions, but I hope the neurologist can help you.
