What do you need to know about desensitization?

Allergies affect more and more people – especially those living in the city. Therefore, there is a growing interest in immunotherapy, i.e. desensitization. Before you decide on long-term treatment, find out what exactly this therapy is all about.

1/8 Allergy

An allergy is the body’s response to an allergen, a substance that the body recognizes as foreign. Allergy is not something natural, but a pathological condition – we talk about it when the reaction of our body is disproportionately acute to the threat. photo: Shutterstock

2/ 8 Grass pollen

When we think about allergies, the first thing we think about is pollen, which is ubiquitous in summer. Indeed, grass pollen is the main enemy of allergy sufferers. Interestingly, they are annoying even in the city, where there is less pollen than in the countryside. This is because in the agglomeration, pollen is additionally covered with particles of pollutants, which contributes to an even more severe reaction of the body to their presence. photo: Shutterstock

3/8 Allergens

Other common allergens include smog, dust mites, dust, and animal hair. When it comes to food allergies, the most common causes are milk, gluten, chicken eggs, nuts, celery, shellfish and soy. We often react badly to citrus as well, but this is due to the pesticide sprayed on them rather than to the fruit itself. photo: Shutterstock

4/ 8 Tearing and red eyes

When allergy symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes and itchy skin become unbearable, we begin to consider desensitization. However, this therapy is lengthy and quite expensive, so many people wonder if it is worth starting. What is this treatment? photo: Shutterstock

5/ 8 Desensitization

Before the doctor develops a treatment plan, it is necessary to carefully examine what antigens we react to. The basis of desensitization is the application of initially small doses of the allergen. As therapy progresses, the dosage increases more and more. Allergens can be administered in the form of injections, oral preparations and inhalation. photo: Shutterstock

6/ 8 IgE antibodies

The very mechanism of the desensitization process is not well understood, but it is postulated that in the course of treatment the IgE antibodies causing an allergic reaction are replaced with IgG and IgA antibodies, which do not cause such a severe reaction. In other words, with increasing doses of a substance, our body begins to “get used to it” and tolerate it. photo: Shutterstock

7/ 8 Desensitization and age

Unfortunately, desensitization does not always produce the desired results. The best results are obtained with allergies to insect venom and to pollen. There is also a relationship between the patient’s age and the effectiveness of treatment – the younger the patient, the greater the likelihood of cure. In addition, it is worth noting that people who are allergic to few allergens and those who have mild symptoms have the best chance of getting rid of allergies. photo: Shutterstock

8/ 8 Desensitization therapy

You must also be aware that when starting desensitization, we must be ready for a prolonged period of treatment. Usually, therapy lasts three to five years. There are times, however, that some advances in treatment are noticeable, but very slight. In such cases, desensitization may extend by even several more years. photo: Shutterstock
