What role do white blood cells play in the human body? Why may white blood cells be present in the urine? What do the elevated levels of white blood cells in the urine show? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What do white blood cells in the urine show?
Good day. I have had health problems for a long time. And I get a cold and flu, and this is a strange rash, and now I have problems with the urinary system. For several days now, I have been feeling the pressure on my bladder, I have to use the toilet a lot and sometimes (not always) burning sensation when urinating. He also feels pain in the kidney area. With these symptoms I went to my family doctor. This one referred me to a urine test. This morning I took my urine to the lab and got my results in the afternoon.
It turned out that I have elevated levels of white blood cells in the urine. What does this show? What do they mean white blood cells in the urine? Is it any urinary tract infectionor maybe something more serious. I am a bit worried because I found a lot of contradictory information on the Internet. I will also ask what the standard should be white blood cells in the urine. I do not have an appointment with the doctor until tomorrow, so I would like to receive any information. Should I be worried? Please let me know. Regards
Your doctor will point out possible causes of white blood cells in your urine
Madam, the presence of leukocytes in the urine may indicate urinary tract infection (ZUM). Of course, the result should be interpreted against the patient’s clinical condition. Symptoms such as pollakiuria (polyuria), discomfort in the lower abdomen, burning in the urethra or the feeling of incomplete voiding are characteristic of urinary tract infections.
Same the presence of leukocytes without the presence of symptoms, it does not entitle us to make such a diagnosis. In addition to leukocytes, the general examination of the urine can detect bacteria, which allows us to diagnose UTIs. Normal urinary leukocyte count is generally 2-5 wpw (in the field of view).
When collecting urine for the test, remember to thoroughly wash the area of the urethra beforehand and collect urine from the so-called middle stream. This is to minimize the risk of microbial contamination of the sample. With pain in the lumbar region, hematuria, high fever, acute pyelonephritis can be suspected.
Treatment of urinary tract infections it consists mainly in the use of antibiotics, depending on whether the doctor suspects cystitis, pyelonephritis or urethritis, an appropriate antibiotic is selected. In order to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to a specific antibiotic, urine culture with an antibiotic should be performed. The waiting time for the result may be several days, therefore the attending physician may initiate the antibiotic empirically (based on suspected presence of a specific pathogen) without the result, correcting it after receiving the result.
Occasionally, the urine general result also shows the presence of nitrites which normally should not be present in the urine. Their presence is due to the presence of Gram negative bacteria and thus indirectly indicates a bacterial infection.
After the end of antibacterial treatment, it is worthwhile to perform a general urinalysis again. If the infections recur, I suggest performing an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity.
