What are segmented granulocytes? What role do they play in the body? How should their result be interpreted? What can lowered segmented granulocytes indicate? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.

What does a low level of segmented granulocytes indicate?

Good day. I am the mother of a six-year-old Klaudia. For some time my daughter has been complaining that she feels unwell. When asked if she is in pain, she says generally no, but she doesn’t even have the strength to play and feels constantly tired. About two weeks ago, we treated her for ulcers in the mouth (after the treatment, everything in her mouth was gone within three or four days). Without thinking for a long time, I went with my daughter to the family doctor again.

After the examination, he found nothing disturbing except for slightly enlarged lymph nodes. For this reason, we were referred for a complete blood count. Of course, the next day I did it for my daughter and I got the analysis today. It shows that the daughter has reduced segmented granulocytes. Honestly, I have no idea what they are responsible for in the body. What do they mean granulocytes segmented below normal in a child? The results do not show the standard for them, only it says that they are lowered. So what is it norm of segmented granulocytes in a child?

Should I be concerned? Does this indicator mean some serious illness in your daughter? Tomorrow we are going to the doctor in the late afternoon, but I am asking for any feedback as I am very worried. Regards, Marta.

The doctor indicates potential reasons for the decrease in segmented granulocytes in the child

Blood count test is performed in order to determine the number of its morphotic elements and to analyze some of their features. One of the elements assessed in morphology are leukocytes.

Leukocytes, or white blood cells, are a heterogeneous group of blood cells. There are 5 cell sub-populations in it. Belong to them: neutrophilic granulocytes (neutrophils), eosinophilic granulocytes (eozynofile), basophils (basophils) lymphocytes and monocytes. Among neutrophils we can mention younger forms with a rod-shaped nucleus and older ones with a segmented nucleus. The main parameter assessing the leukocyte system is WBC – total white blood cell count. For more detailed information, see the blood smear, which will give you the number of individual white blood cell populations per unit volume.

Normal percentage of rod neutrophils (neutrophils) is 3-5%, segmented neutrophils (neutrophils) 57-65%, eosinophils 2-4%, basophils (basophils) 0-1%, lymphocytes 20-45% , monocytes 4-8%. This reduction in the percentage of neutrophils is called neutropenia. The causes of neutropenia may be different. They include, among others acute leukemia, any infections, myelodysplastic syndromes, congenital factors, splenomegaly, medication use, radiation therapy, and more. Leukemia is one of the most common cancers in children. Decrease in the percentage of neutrocytes in the peripheral blood in the course of leukemia leads to symptoms of infections including mouth ulcers.

I would not want to frighten you unnecessarily. I just want to point out that you cannot ignore such symptoms in a child. Chronic fatigue is not natural for a child. Further diagnostics under the supervision of a specialist is necessary. Please consult the results of the morphology examination with your pediatrician. The attending physician will decide on the further treatment based on the entire clinical picture.
