What does the EOS indicator mean? What is the effect of the decreased level of this indicator in morphology? Does a low result indicate a developing infection? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.

What is the reason for the decreased level of EOS in morphology?

Hello. I am 22 years old and have a question about the morphology results. For a long time I have noticed that I catch infections much faster, especially those affecting the upper respiratory tract, I take longer to heal. I will also add that I am allergic, I have confirmed it allergy test allergy to dust, mites, fungi and molds. The frequency of allergy attacks and their intensity increased, the allergist doctor recommended that I increase the doses of drugs, I take Deslodyne syrup and Metmin drops permanently, but because the allergy is combined with other infections, I feel bad, which makes me more weakened.

Last week I did a blood test, I received the results today and the description says that they are there lowered EOS. What do they mean decreased EOS in morphology? What function do they play eosinophils in the body and could their lowered rate be a signal that some infection has started? I am asking for a hint and answer what decreased EOS in morphology mean, because I have an appointment with an allergist in two weeks, should he do something so far, maybe additional tests, or maybe include vitamins or supplements.

The doctor explains the reasons for the decreased EOS rate

Blood count is a commonly performed test. It assesses the number of morphotic elements and analyzes some of their features. There are white blood cells in the blood – leukocytes. Leukocytes are a heterogeneous group of cells, out of which 5 cell sub-populations are distinguished. These include neutrophils (neutrophils), eosinophils, basophils (basophils), lymphocytes and monocytes. These cells are part of the immune system.

EOS is an abbreviation for eosinophil count. Standard scope for the number of eosinophils in the blood peripheral area is 50-400 / µl. Sometimes the norms are given as a percentage. A microscopic examination with the percentage of individual leukocyte subpopulations is called the Schilling image. An increase in eosinophils is called eosinophilia and a decrease in eosinopenia. Hypereosinophilic syndrome is the occurrence of particularly high cell counts, tissue infiltrates, and organ complications. Usually, eosinophilia indicates a parasitic disease or allergy. Other causes may include medication, cancer, cancer treatment, and infections.

Often, eosinophils are elevated in the course of systemic diseases. There is a high percentage of eosinophils in skin diseases such as psoriasis, endocrine disorders (Hashimoto’s disease, primary adrenal insufficiency), inflammatory bowel disease, and connective tissue diseases. The list of causes is long. It all depends on the comorbid symptoms. Eosinopenia may indicate states of reduced immunity, e.g. in the case of chronic stress, medications taken, or in tumors of the hematopoietic system.

However, a reduction in morphology only in the number of eosinophils slightly below normal is usually not a sign of serious illness. The morphology results are always assessed holistically. One parameter should not be analyzed in isolation from the rest. Additionally, the clinical picture presented by the patient is of key importance. I suggest consulting the results of the morphology research with the attending physician.
