What does a low level of leukocytes in pregnancy indicate? Can low leukocytes in pregnancy mean you are prone to colds? Do low leukocytes mean lowered immunity? Are lowered leukocytes a cause for concern? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What do low leukocytes in pregnancy indicate?
Good day. My wife is pregnant. I could say – finally, because we have been trying to have a child for five years. Of course, from the very beginning, we are very careful about the baby, the wife performs regular examinations and is under the supervision of a gynecologist. Recently, however, my wife’s test results have caused us some anxiety as it turned out that her leukocyte levels were low. As evidenced by low leukocytes in pregnancy? I associate leukocytes with immunity, so I thought their low levels might be due to pregnancy-related immunity, although that’s just my guess.
Could low leukocytes in pregnancy mean my wife will be more susceptible to illness, some colds etc? Or is this evidence of some other illness of the wife or child? I’m worried that something bad will happen to them and we’ve tried so much to get my wife pregnant… Is there a risk that something bad is happening? What do low leukocytes in pregnancy show? Is the pregnancy at risk or is there no need to worry? Thank you in advance for your answer.
The doctor explains the causes of low leukocytes in pregnancy
Leukocytes, or white blood cells, are a heterogeneous population of cells that are blood morphotic elements. The subpopulations of white blood cells in the peripheral blood include neutrophils (neutrophils), eosinophils, basophils (basophils), lymphocytes and monocytes. Changes in the total number of leukocytes should always be considered together with changes in the abundance of their subpopulations.
Typically, the increase / decrease in the total number of white blood cells is related to a change in the number of their largest subpopulations, neutrophils and lymphocytes. Valid range of leukocyte count values it is in the range of 4000-10 / µl. Usually, there is a physiological increase in white blood cells during pregnancy. Leukocytes are a component of the immune system. They take part in the fight against pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Reduction in the number of leukocytes – leukopenia can have many causes. It may occur, inter alia, at the beginning of the infection. Then leukocytes accumulate at the site of infection.
Before the body can produce the missing number of white blood cells, we can observe pseudoleukopenia in the test. Low levels of leukocytes in pregnancy can be caused by physical exertion, stress, injuries, burns, taking certain medications, viral infections (influenza, HIV, viral hepatitis), bacterial infections, hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, congenital immunodeficiency, systemic connective tissue diseases , cancer and many others.
Remember that we do not diagnose the patient on the basis of the blood count result. With abnormal morphology results, the test should be repeated often to notice changes in parameters, whether they have decreased / increased. Test results should always be considered individually. In order to make a diagnosis, it is necessary to visit a general practitioner, and in the case of pregnancy – a gynecologist, who will be able to examine the patient and perform any further tests.
