What are leukocytes? At what point does the level of leukocytes indicate a medical condition? What does an excessively low level of leukocytes in a blood test show? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What does a low level of leukocytes indicate?
Good day. I would like to ask what they testify to leukocytes below normal? From what point of deviation from the norm can you talk about leukopenia and when is it just some temporary decrease in leukocytes? I am asking because I have been doing some basic research recently due to the fact that I am often sick and have dangerous signs of a significant decline in immunity. Could leukocytes below normal be related to this? And if so, what exactly does this test result mean?
I’m worried that I have leukemia or some other serious illness … I know it’s better not to “diagnose” myself this way, but I can’t shake the thought that something is wrong with me. Previously, I was rather a specimen of health, nothing serious happened to me and now my health is really bad. What do leukocytes below normal testify to? Where did these results come from for me? Is it just a decline in immunity, which can be easily dealt with, for example, by taking some vitamins or medications, or is it some serious disease? Thank you in advance for your answer.
The doctor indicates possible causes of low leukocytes
Dear sir, please write down what you are often ill with and what dangerous signs decrease in immunity occur. Unfortunately, you have provided too little data. Leukopenia, i.e. a reduced content of leukocytes in the blood, is a common abnormality in blood count. Normal leukocyte count it should be 4-10 thousand / microliter.
The most common causes of leukopenia include various types of infections, especially at the very beginning of their development. You mentioned frequent illnesses and decreased immunity. Passing viral infections, including the flu or the common cold, can also result in persistent leukopenia. Less common causes of leukopenia include extreme malnutrition, the use of certain groups of drugs, including immunosuppressants, glucocorticosteroids, antipsychotics and antidepressants.
Unfortunately, leukopenia can also indicate diseases of the hematopoietic system, incl aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis, leukemia or lymphomas. Malaria, chronic liver failure and tuberculosis are extremely rare causes of a reduced amount of leukocytes in the blood. We must not forget about the HIV virus that causes AIDS, which causes a gradual reduction in the number of leukocytes, as well as vitamin deficiencies, especially folic acid and vitamin B12.
I suggest that you go to your family doctor with all existing medical records. After collecting an interview and examining you, the doctor will order additional tests or recommend a hematological consultation.
