What do high leukocytes indicate? What may influence the high score of this indicator? Is it worth giving up intensive training in the case of high leukocytes? Could it be a temporary reaction of the body? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What does high leukocyte count mean?
Hello and welcome. I recently took my mother and son for a blood test. It turned out that both of them are tall high leukocytes. I do not know exactly what the standards are, but I was informed by my doctor that in Mum’s case, their content is 13 / mm3. Do high leukocytes mean Mom has something? Honestly, I’m ready for it, he’s almost 80 years old, but he’s still doing really well.
Please let me know what is the reason for this state of affairs. My mother has been taking heart medications for many years and, like many people of this age, she is unlikely to leave the house. In turn, with the son (he is 10 years old) leukocyte content was 14 thousand / mm3. The doctor mentioned not to worry in advance, but I am worried. Let me add that my son is an avid footballer. He trains 3 times a week and basically likes it physical activity. Due to high leukocytes, should I forbid him from training for a while? Could high leukocytes be just some temporary reaction of the body? Maybe it’s still nothing serious in his case? Thank you for your answer and best regards. Grażyna from Gliwice

The doctor indicates possible causes of elevated leukocytes
Madam, the result alone does not prove anything. The test results should always be analyzed knowing the patient’s history, chronic diseases, ailments and medications he is taking. Correct amount of leukocytes it is between 4-11 thousand / mm3. The values of your mother and son are not disturbing, especially if there are no symptoms. There can be many causes of leukocytosis (increased amount of leukocytes), including infectious diseases, cancer and rheumatic diseases. Also, exercise or a meal may lead to a temporary increase in the amount of leukocytes in the blood.
As I mentioned earlier, the values you presented do not say anything, especially without an interview. Perhaps there is some mildly symptomatic infection? Please ask, especially mom. A urinary tract infection should always be considered in older adults. You can repeat the tests and visit your GP for interpretation. However, if the doctor, after examining my son, firmly stated that there was no cause for concern, I do not see any grounds for concern.
