Montenegro is a tourist’s paradise, and thanks to its unique cuisine, it is also a gourmet’s paradise. Montenegrin culinary traditions have absorbed the best flavors of Italian, Hungarian, Turkish and Austrian cuisines. And whichever part of this country you choose to travel, in any corner of Montenegro you can taste traditional dishes that will surprise you with their originality.
Negushsky prshut
A dish with a strange, difficult to pronounce name – smoked pork on charcoal or dried in the wind pork leg. The recipe and the way of making prosciutto is passed down from generation to generation, the oldest recipe comes from the mountain village of Negushia. Tender meat is served with cheese, olives and used in making sandwiches.
Njegush cheese
The recipe for this cheese also has its roots in the mountain village of Njegushi. This is a homemade product made from sheep or goat milk. The cheese can be fresh, tastes like delicate curd, aged, harder, like unsalted feta cheese, and in olive oil. Served as a cold appetizer, used in cooking, added to salads or filling for pies.
Sour cream
Montenegro is generally famous for its cheeses, among which one can distinguish kaymak – soft white cheese, which is the top layer of baked milk. Kaymak is served as a snack and is used for stewing main courses. You can even just spread it on bread – the sandwich is ready for breakfast.
Shovels or burger
Chepavi is a common meat dish in Montenegro, which is a sausage made from minced meat. It is available in this country both as a separate dish and as a semi-finished product that you can cook yourself. Pleskavitsa is a chevapi in the form of a large flatbread.
Fish
The coastal area of Montenegro is famous for its variety of fish and seafood. Here you will be served delicious trout, sea bass, as well as mussels stewed in white wine, shrimp, octopus, lobster. Try the seafood risotto or grilled dorado, Montenegrin specialties. One more dish cannot be ignored – fishing chorba. It somewhat resembles the familiar ear, but they prepare soup with the addition of tomato paste and paprika.
Lamb from under the sacha
A traditional Montenegrin meat dish is a local delicacy and is highly prized by the locals. Lamb is cooked according to a special recipe over charcoal in a cast-iron pot with a thick lid covered with hot coals. It languishes for 4 hours and is served with potatoes.
Tulumba
Ulumba is a bakery product and is available in almost every store. Baked desserts are soaked in honey syrup and shaped into different shapes. Turkish tulumba goes well with coffee and tea.
Pancakes
Another popular Montenegrin dessert is pancakes with different sweet fillings of your choice. Chocolate, honey, fruit and berry syrups are the perfect finish to a hearty meal.
Alcohol
In Montenegro, a special grape variety Vrnac grows, from which a delicious red dry wine with an identical name is produced. Moreover, there is alcohol both in supermarkets and in markets where homemade wine is sold. Plantage’s Vranac has been recognized by European wine critics more than once. Krstach wine – dry white wine – is also popular and worthy of attention.
Rakia moonshine is made from white grapes in Montenegro. There are also options from pear, quince, plum, honey and so on – all these varieties of moonshine have their own names “plum brandy” and “honey” and so on.
In addition to wine and brandy, local beer Niksichko and freshly squeezed lemonade are popular in Montenegro. At the same time, there is only one brewery in this country.
coffee
Montenegrins appreciate good coffee, and therefore take the preparation of this drink with all responsibility. Montenegrin coffee is prepared according to a special traditional recipe similar to Turkish coffee. It is made in a Turk with added sugar.
