Why do we feel noises in the head? What are their causes? Could buzzing in the head be related to stress or neurosis? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What are the causes of head noise?

Hello, I am a 36-year-old woman and I would like to get advice, information about a problem that I have been struggling with for several months. Namely, for exactly 4 months I feel (hear) this strange noises in the head. Depending on the day, they have different intensity, one day I hear them stronger, the next day it is lighter, i.e. quieter. Sometimes I feel noises in the head and ears (ringing, ticking).

I don’t know if it could make any difference, but the last few months have been quite stressful for me. In connection with this, unfortunately, it came to the fact that I was diagnosed with neurosis. Is there any connection between neurosis and head noise? I would like to add that I have back problems, can these noises in my head appear in connection with them?

At times I am helpless, these noises cause me irritation, confusion and discomfort. The worst thing is that at the worst moments I experience noise in my head and dizziness. This is especially dangerous when, for example, I am driving a car or at home alone. What could be causing the head noise? Which doctor should I go to? What tests to perform? I am asking for advice.

The doctor explains what may be the cause of noise in the head

Madam, causes of head noise there can be many, they can be disorders in the mental or emotional sphere as well as organic disorders. Appropriate research should be performed to find a specific cause.

You wrote that neurosis was diagnosed. Of course, the neurosis that results in constant emotional arousal may be the cause of the perceived noise, although without excluding other causes it cannot be taken for granted. You wrote that you have back problems. I regret that you did not provide more detailed information, especially what these problems are and what part of the spine they concern.

This information is crucial for the doctor, because in the case of, among others, degenerative changes in the cervical spine, there may be pressure on the vertebral arteries supplying the posterior part of the brain together with the cerebellum with blood. Insufficient amount of blood, and thus oxygen supplied to the brain, may manifest itself not only in noise, but also in dizziness, and from what you wrote, you also have such dizziness.

Another cause you to feel noise there are tumors in the head and sounds that press on the nerves or auditory centers, the same applies to tumors of the cerebellum and centers responsible for motor coordination in the event of dizziness or balance disorders. In your case, I suggest starting treatment of neurosis but also please visit a neurologist, especially if you feel dizzy.

A specialist doctor will refer you to appropriate tests, including magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, which will allow to exclude intracranial organic changes. It would be good to do the same examination, but of the cervical spine, to make sure that there is no pressure on the vertebral arteries.

If the neurologist will not be able to help you, I suggest you go to an ENT specialist who will be able to confirm or rule out any abnormalities in the inner ear, which is responsible for receiving sounds and maintaining body balance.
