What does high CRP prove? What could be the causes of high CRP levels in the body? Is high CRP associated with heart problems? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What could be the causes of high CRP?

Good day. I would like to ask what could be cause of high CRP? My doctor recommended that I undergo this test because of my heart rhythm disturbances. Initially, I could not do the test because I had a problem with pneumonia and the doctor told me that the test cannot be done when the body is inflamed. Recently, however, I did and the test showed me that I have an elevated result.

So I wanted to ask what could be causing high CRP? Is this result related to my condition heart rhythm disturbances can the reasons be different? Of course, I am waiting for an appointment with the doctor, but I am worried because the result is not the best and I do not know if I have reasons to worry. I was still wondering if I hadn’t done the tests too soon since the pneumonia was cured.

However, for two weeks now I have been fully healthy and I have learned that such a period should be enough to be able to perform the test. So where did this result come from? What can it show? Please reply.

The doctor points out the potential causes of high CRP

Sir, CRP protein belongs to the so-called acute phase proteins, i.e. proteins whose concentration increases due to the presence of inflammation in the body. Normal protein concentration is assumed to be less than 5 mg / l. However, in smokers or obese people, a normal concentration is considered to be less than 10 mg / ml. As I mentioned to increase in CRP protein concentration occurs when the body develops inflammation, mainly due to an infectious disease.

It is assumed that if a patient presents symptoms of an infection, for example of the upper respiratory tract, and the CRP protein is less than 40 mg / L, a viral infection may be suspected. However, if the concentration is higher, exceeding 100 mg / l, it is more likely that the etiology is bacterial. Severe bacterial contamination should be considered in the case of very high CRP protein levels, 400-500 mg / L. Interestingly elevated CRP levels can also be observed in pregnant women.

Regarding causes of increased CRP levels as I mentioned, first of all, you should take into account infectious diseases, but also burns, neoplastic diseases, kidney failure and connective tissue diseases. If a disease entity other than infection is suspected, detailed diagnostics for the above-mentioned diseases should be performed.

It is a pity that you did not provide the results of your examination or more detailed information about your health condition. Perhaps the result is incorrect due to an illness you have recently had. There may be symptoms of another developing infection that you did not mention. As I say, it’s hard to tell from such a meager description.

I propose to repeat the examination and go to the family doctor as a result. I will also mention that CRP test result worth comparing with the blood count. An increased amount of leukocytes along with an increased CRP concentration plus symptoms of infection allow a diagnosis to be made with high probability.
