The adrenal gland syndrome is caused by an overactive adrenal cortex, especially in relation to the increased secretion of androcorticoids, or sex hormones, usually as a result of its hypertrophy.

Depending on the sex and age at which the disease began, there are several clinical forms of this syndrome.

Alleged androgynouswhen the disease began in utero. There is then no clear, unequivocal definition of sex: e.g. in an individual with testicles, i.e. male sex glands (usually still in the abdominal cavity or in the inguinal canals), the dominance of female secondary sexual characteristics in the general appearance (no facial hair, no hair) is observed. typically female sites, excessive development of the mammary glands, etc.).

Premature maturation: the disease begins before the period of normal puberty, i.e. sexual maturation. Then, excessive physical development of the child and sexual maturity beyond the age, with mental development appropriate to the age, are observed.

Virilism (in women) or feminism (men): when the disease develops during puberty.

O virilism we mean when we observe irregular menstruation in women, progressive obesity, excessive male hair growth, a change in the psyche and tone of the voice towards a man, and the development of a male body structure.

Feminism – extremely rare – occurs in men. It is characterized by the development of female secondary sexual characteristics (female hair, enlargement of the mammary glands and female psyche), loss of sex drive to women, reduction of sexual organs and progressive obesity.

Diagnosis and treatment of the described syndromes is possible only in highly specialized clinical centers, primarily on the basis of the observed disease symptoms, as well as multidirectional analytical tests of hormones.
