What is the reason for pain in the eye socket?

Good day. I have a somewhat strange health problem and I wonder what could be the result of it. It is about eye socket painwhich appeared at my place a dozen or so days ago. This is the first time that I have ever experienced this problem and at first I thought that the pain in the eye socket would go away by itself and I just irritated my eye with something. Unfortunately, the pain in the eye socket lasts all the time and I do not know what it may be the result of. What causes orbital pain? I certainly didn’t hit my eye in any way, and I don’t remember anything that could irritate my eye.

It is strange for me that it is not about the eye itself, but the pain is mainly related to the eye socket. It is not a very severe pain, but with varying severity, the pain in the orbit accompanies me almost all day, sometimes it only slightly subsides. Could orbital pain have any more serious health consequences? And most importantly – what he should do to get rid of pain in the eye socket. Are there any special methods for diagnosing the causes of orbital pain that will explain what caused this problem in my case? I will be very grateful for your answer. Regards

The doctor indicates possible causes of orbital pain

Orbital pain can have many causes. The eye socket is the bone cavity in which the eyeball is located. Pain in the area of the eye socket may be due to inflammation of the paranasal sinuses adjacent to the orbit. There are maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Inflammation of the sinuses is manifested by headaches, face pain, difficulty breathing and worsening of symptoms when bending the head. Additionally, there may be a cough, swelling of the soft tissues around the eyes, and impaired sense of smell. By inflammation of the maxillary sinuses there may be toothache. The infection is often accompanied by a fever. However, sinusitis is not the only cause of orbital pain.

Pain in this location may be related to the radiation of pain from the teeth. Therefore, a dental consultation is also often needed. The cause of pain in the orbit may be orbital tumors, e.g. optic nerve glioma or optic nerve meningioma. Pain in the orbital area may be a symptom of orbital tissue inflammation, an orbital abscess, posterior scleritis or inflammation of the optic nerve. A common cause of orbital pain is decompensated vision defect. In Graves’ disease there is a symptom of thyroid orbitopathy. As a result of endocrine disorders, the tissue volume in the eye socket increases. A characteristic symptom is exophthalmia of both eyes.

Depending on the severity of the disease, there may also be swelling of the eyelids, conjunctiva, double vision, photophobia, reduced visual acuity, or pain. As you can see causes of orbital pain There are many. Therefore, sometimes it takes time to perform the necessary diagnostics and visit doctors of several specialties. If your symptoms persist, I suggest you go to an ophthalmologist first. The doctor will perform an eye test and find out if the cause of the symptoms is the pathology in the eye. Further diagnosis may be necessary.
