What are the causes of microcytic anemia? What is the treatment of such anemia? How should you proceed in order not to worsen your health? Is treatment based on medication or dietary supplements? What dietary changes will help fight microcytic anemia? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What are the causes of microcytic anemia?
Hello and welcome. I’d like to ask the doctor what’s up the cause of microcytic anemia and how to treat it? I’ve never had a health problem before, but recently a routine check-up showed me iron deficiency anemia. I was very surprised because I did not change anything in my diet, but my health deteriorated. Could anything other than diet be causing microcytic anemia?
I do not know at all how this condition could develop in me, and maybe I am doing something wrong and I could correct it somehow. I would also like to ask what it looks like treatment of microcytic anemia? Will I need to take any medications or supplements for anemia? Or maybe there is one diet in microcytic anemiawhich I could introduce at home? I am worried about my health and I would love to do something about it, and not necessarily take some serious medications right away. I would also be grateful for the information whether microcytic anemia may have any negative impact on my health? Should I pay attention to anything special?
The doctor explains the causes of microcytic anemia
Anemia is defined as a decrease in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and blood red blood cells by> 2 standard deviations from normal. Characteristic the size of erythrocytes allows for an initial differentiation of the causes of irregularities. The most common form of anemia is caused by iron deficiency due to too little iron in the body. As a result, the heme synthesis is impaired and the erythrocytes are smaller than the normal ones – microcytic ones.
The disease manifests itself generally symptoms of anemia such as weakness, easy fatigue, impaired concentration and attention, headache and dizziness, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, pale skin and mucous membranes. Additionally, the characteristic symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include a distorted, selective appetite, e.g. clay, chalk, pain, burning, and smoothing the surface of the tongue. There is dry skin, painful cracks in the corners of the mouth, pale brittle nails, weak and brittle hair.
The disease is more common in women due to the fact that it is increased iron requirements in menstruating women. In these women the demand is – 2 mg / d, during pregnancy and lactation – 3 mg / d, in postmenopausal women and men – 1 mg / d. Many conditions can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Major causes include blood loss, increased demand, impaired gastrointestinal absorption, dietary deficiency, and iron-resistant iron deficiency anemia.
Treatment, depending on the cause of the disease, includes its removal and supplementation of iron deficiency in the body. Sometimes there is a need to transfuse blood products. Usually, treatment requires supplementation with appropriate doses of iron. However, you can support the treatment by using a diet rich in this element. Products rich in iron include meat, meat offal, fish, especially sardines, chicken eggs, cereal products, vegetables, especially chard, broad beans, beetroot, spinach, parsley, fruits, especially currants, wild strawberries, raspberries, avocados, and dried fruit.
