A salty taste in the mouth can be a fairly common condition and causes include:
- dehydration, for example as a result of vomiting or diarrhea, exposure to heat or strenuous exercise. The main symptoms are extreme thirst, infrequent urination, dark urine, weakness, a spinning feeling and confusion;
- bleeding from the mouth – in this case you can feel a metallic or salty taste in your mouth. It can be the result of eating hard and spicy foods (such as chips) or brushing your teeth too hard and irritating your gums. Frequent irritation of the gums can cause gingivitis;
