What can be the reaction to polio vaccination in children, child

The response to polio vaccination depends on the method of vaccination. It is not as terrible as the disease itself, the consequence of which is the paralysis of various muscles. Before getting vaccinated, parents must decide which method to choose and learn all about its side effects.

Ways to vaccinate a child against polio

The pathogenic agent of the disease is transmitted through the air. Within 2 weeks, the terrible infection proceeds in a latent form. Often sick children die. Most of the survivors remain disabled for life. The question is: whether it is necessary to vaccinate the baby is removed, it is enough for the parents to learn more about the disease.

The reaction to the polio vaccine is no more dangerous than the disease itself.

Medicine uses 2 methods of vaccination:

  • oral polio vaccine, or OPV drops;
  • inactivated polio vaccine, IPV – injections.

Each method has its own side effects. With OPV, in one in 2,5 million cases, a child becomes infected with polio.

What can be the reaction of children to the vaccine

OPV is a more gentle method. However, drops are prescribed for absolutely healthy children with good immunity. The injections are more painful, but with IPV it is impossible to get sick with the vaccine.

Side effects of IPV are rare and mild. This is:

  • local reaction to the injection,
  • slight rise in temperature
  • lethargy
  • decreased appetite.

Children with an allergic reaction to the antibiotics Kanamycin, Streptomycin and Neomycin are difficult to tolerate.

Complications of OPV vaccination have a slightly different nature:

  • allergic reaction,
  • diarrhea,
  • polio infection.

The latter is possible only with serious immune disorders. OPV gives stronger immunity, which is important when the baby’s family plans to go abroad, to countries where there is a high risk of contracting polio.

Before vaccination, it is necessary to check if the baby has contraindications. Do not vaccinate with OPV:

  • while taking antibiotics,
  • with immunodeficiency,
  • while taking medications to enhance immunity,
  • with neuralgic anomalies.

IPV is contraindicated in:

  • bright allergic reactions,
  • oncology,
  • warts.

Before and after vaccination, the child should be under the supervision of a doctor. It is not recommended to break the vaccination schedule.

Complications after OPV or IPV resolve on their own or with treatment. The disease itself is not cured. At the moment, the most effective way to deal with a dangerous disease is vaccination. To abandon it for fear of complications is to expose the baby to even greater danger.
