Yes, you will have to say goodbye to tomatoes and peppers. But it is possible and necessary to benefit from the empty land!
Planting peas
Early maturing varieties of peas ripen in 40-50 days. And they can be safely sown until July 15th. But it is important to remember that peas are a rather moisture-loving crop, and drought often occurs at the height of summer. Therefore, before sowing, the seeds must be soaked in water for at least 2 days, and it is even better to germinate so that the root penetrates the soil as quickly as possible and can extract moisture.
Pea seeds are planted to a depth of 3-4 cm, and after sowing, the beds should be well watered and mulched with humus or hay (if it is not available, with ordinary grass, it will turn into hay within 2-3 days).
Varieties for summer sowing: 6 weeks, Alpha, Ambrosia, Vega, Cheerful guys, Voronezh green, Gloriosa (Gloria), Medovik, Firstborn, Pioneer.
Predecessors. It is best to grow peas after tomatoes and potatoes, so if they were beaten by frost, this is where you should sow the legume.
Planting a radish
Most summer residents grow radishes in the spring – this is a cold-resistant crop, it yields very quickly, it is harvested and usually forgotten until next year. In summer, radishes are grown because they are short-day plants – if the sun shines for more than 12 hours a day, the plants go into the arrow. However, in the second half of summer, the days become shorter, so radishes can be sown again. Yes, not once!
The first sowing period is from July 25 to August 5. This is the so-called summer sowing. For such periods, mid-ripening varieties that ripen 30 – 35 days are suitable. By the time they begin to develop root crops, the days will be short and the weather cool – these are ideal conditions for radishes.
Varieties for summer sowing: Rose-red with a white tip, Mohovsky, Regge, Saxa RS, Saratov, Virov white, Poker.
The second sowing period is from August 25 to September 1. Such sowing is called autumn sowing. Late varieties are suitable for it, which give a harvest in 40 – 50 days. If weather forecasters promise a warm autumn, radishes can be sown directly on the beds – the roots will ripen by the end of September. If cold weather is planned, go to the greenhouse.
Since there is no longer a strong heat at the end of summer, the nights are often cool and dew falls, there are no special requirements for watering when sowing during these periods. Radishes should be watered in the same way as in spring – every 2 to 3 days, and if this is not possible, the beds should be mulched with hay or grass.
Varieties for autumn sowing: Red giant, Würzburg 59, Dungan 12/8, Autumn giant, Riesenbutter.
Predecessors. The largest yields are given by radishes sown after cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes or potatoes.
Radish planting
Winter varieties of radish can be sown from June 15 to July 10. These are recommendations for any year, because when sown in spring, the plants bloom, and the root crops become coarse and are not stored in winter. And if earlier summer residents bypassed these root crops, because there is nowhere to sow, now the time has come for her.
Since radish is sown in the midst of summer, in the heat, it is useful to cover the crops with a non-woven fabric – it will help retain moisture in the soil and protect seedlings from pests.
Varieties for summer sowing: Black winter round, Margelan, Red Meat, Elephant’s Fang.
Predecessors. Radishes are best grown after cucumbers, zucchini, peppers and eggplants.
Landing daikon
Most varieties of daikon are short day plants. During spring sowing, they go into the arrow, the root crops stop growing and the yield drops sharply. therefore, they need to be sown from June 20 to July 20.
Daikon crops should be well watered and mulched with humus or compost so that moisture remains in the soil longer.
Varieties for summer sowing: at the end of June, you can sow late and mid-ripening varieties – Mammoth Tusk, Diamond, Astor, Baseball, Dragon, Dubinushka, and for sowing at the end of July it is better to choose early ones – Ice Con, Barchonok, White Sun, Vakula.
Predecessors. Daikon works well after potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins – just those crops that are the first to die from frost.
Planting turnip
Usually turnips are sown in late April – early May, since it is a cold-resistant crop. And few people know that it can be sown in the summer – from July 1 to July 10, but you need to choose early varieties in which the root crop ripens quickly – 60 – 80 days. Usually there is always not enough space for turnips, but this year it will be possible to attach it to empty beds.

Predecessors. Turnips work well after potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers.
Planting kohlrabi
Kohlrabi cabbage is traditionally sown in 2 terms – in late April – early May and in summer, from July 1 to July 15. Early varieties are ideal for summer sowing.
Since kohlrabi, like any cabbage, is very moisture-loving, the seeds must be soaked before sowing, and the wells should be shed well before sowing, so that the soil gets wet to a depth of 15 cm. The crops must be covered with a film – it will provide friendly shoots. But as soon as sprouts appear, the film must be removed. And cover the crops with nectan – it will protect the soil from drying out, and the plants themselves – from pests.
Varieties for summer sowing: Viennese white 1350, Moravia.
Predecessors. Kohlrabi works well after tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers.
