Good day, dear readers of my blog! Depression is a very complex disease, due to which a person can become disabled, lose interest in life, acquire a number of other diseases, and, worst of all, commit suicide. But very often it is confused with other emotional disorders, so today I want to tell you what are the symptoms of deep depression.
General about the disease
It arises as a result of any psycho-traumatic situation, or even minor stresses that accompany a person for a long period, exhausting and exhausting him. Sadness, sadness and pain are natural reactions to loss or disappointment, but sometimes they are not fully experienced due to various circumstances, or because of the inability to withstand the intensity of these feelings, so a transition occurs to a state of severe depression. But it can be cured if detected and diagnosed in time.
What are the symptoms
Psychological
1. Decreased self-esteem
Under a series of failures and disappointments, the thought arises that he is simply not capable of something that is unlucky in life, compared to other people who nevertheless found their calling and place in life. This state is like a swamp, which worsens the situation and well-being.
You can read my blog post on this topic, «Best Techniques for Success to Finally Believe in Yourself».
2. Constant living of feelings of despair, anxiety and sadness
They are lived very painfully, and can also be accompanied by a feeling of despondency, disappointment, inner emptiness, and sometimes there is a fear that this is forever and a person will never enjoy life and experience other feelings that are more pleasant and give a feeling of pleasure.
3. Decreased activity or apathy
A person loses the desire to do something, communicate with people, and in general, get out of bed in the morning. Over time, he closes in on himself, stops leaving the house, which leads to a decrease in the quantity and quality of new sensations and impressions, some kind of diversity, and this only increases despair and despondency, he seems to walk in a vicious circle, not having the opportunity and strength break out.
4. Loneliness and difficulties in relationships
Due to the fact that a person with this disorder is constantly accompanied by anxiety, a feeling of emptiness and other similar feelings, he is uncomfortable in the company of other people who can rejoice or have fun. Due to low self-esteem, there is a feeling of «uselessness», as if superfluous at this celebration of life. Due to the constant avoidance of contact with the other, already established, intimate relationships begin to break down.
From this comes a very traumatic living of loneliness, which is especially acutely felt when there are a sufficient number of people around who communicate and are interested in each other, and it is impossible to find a place among them.
5.Wines
When making any mistake, due to the fact that self-esteem is too low, a person experiences too heightened a sense of guilt, which has a destructive effect on the psyche.
6. Negative thoughts
They are not only a symptom, but also constitute the causes of the onset and intensification of depression. Because all thoughts and energy are concentrated on the negative, that everything will be bad and nothing will work out, it will never be good. And they so absorb a person that he becomes unable to notice something pleasant in his life, it will simply be ignored, while the concentration of attention will be on the smallest failures, as proof of his bad luck.
7. Thoughts of suicide
They can occur during the life of absolutely everyone, especially in adolescents, and this is normal. But during depression, they appear very often, as a way to get rid of pain, suffering and a sense of hopelessness. When the future seems hopeless and does not bode well, and a person sees no other way out but to commit suicide.
Biological
1. Sleep disorders
Insomnia very often accompanies people during the stay of this disease. A person cannot fall asleep, falling asleep from fatigue only in the morning, or vice versa, waking up in the middle of the night, due to nightmares or feelings of anxiety and inner emptiness, cannot find a place for himself and relax in order to fall asleep again. Sometimes there are cases when a completely opposite situation occurs, when drowsiness overcomes, there is no strength to get out of bed, and there is constant pathological fatigue. Due to the fact that during sleep the body does not recover, resources are exhausted, and all energy is wasted. I wrote about this in the article “What if you wake up very early and don’t know what to do about it?”.
2. Appetite disorders
Due to the lack of interest in life, there is a reluctance to eat. A person out of habit, knowing that it is necessary, continues to eat, but he will not experience saturation and satisfaction, sometimes without even feeling the taste. Over time, he will lose weight, and his appearance will take on an exhausted and sickly look. Or vice versa, trying to muffle the unbearable feeling of emptiness and hopelessness, he begins to eat too much, as if “jamming” his emotional difficulties. And this will eventually lead to obesity, which will only increase dissatisfaction with yourself and your life, self-esteem will fall even lower and there will be an even greater desire to avoid people and just go out.
3. Decreased sex drive
It occurs at the physiological level, and most often in women who, for example, can continue to love their spouse, but do not feel interest and excitement in him. Which over time can lead to a deterioration in relationships, which will only increase depression.
4. Fatigue
I have already said that activity decreases and a person has to make great efforts in order to do the usual things and work. The body is not able to recover because a lot of energy is blocked or spent on living anxiety, fear, despondency and similar feelings, as well as due to sleep disorders. The process of constructive exchange is disrupted, when energy is released in an exciting and interesting activity, and then resumes during rest. A vivid example is children, who are sometimes completely hyperactive and tireless, because they get pleasure and joy.
5. Anhedonia
This is a disease in which a person simply loses the ability to rejoice. Violations occur in those parts of the nervous system that are responsible for living and receiving pleasure. Therefore, the taste and interest in life is lost, which becomes gray and meaningless.
6. Panic
These attacks can occur at the most unexpected moment, even when there is no reason to believe that some kind of danger threatens. It lasts about 10 minutes, and at the same time there is pain in the chest, heartbeat quickens, dizziness, fingers and toes go numb, sometimes fainting occurs, breathing is frequent and with shortness of breath. This state is very frightening, not only because of the fear of some kind of danger, but also because of the loss of control over oneself. Because of these attacks, there may be a fear of open space and crowded places in general, when a person simply stops leaving the house over time.
These are the main symptoms that accompany major depression in both men and women, and, unfortunately, adolescents. There may be only a few signs, but in especially severe cases of the course of this disease, everything is present that complicates the recovery process. Therefore, treatment must be taken immediately. But there are also additional symptoms by which you can detect this disorder.
Additional Consequences
- Hypochondria, in which a person, for no reason, begins to worry too much about his health. He finds in himself a lot of diseases that doctors refute, but this does not stop, but on the contrary, encourages him to look for other specialists who are more qualified and still confirm far-fetched diagnoses.
- Forgetfulness. There is difficulty in concentrating, a depressed person cannot concentrate on something and has difficulty with memory.
- Addiction. To cope with the state of depression, addiction to alcohol or drugs may arise. Which give a short-term effect of relief. It is dangerous that after the end of intoxication, the state of despondency and hopelessness intensifies even more, and then it becomes necessary to repeat the technique, drawing into addiction, which will create even more problems. You can read about alcoholism in my article “Symptoms of alcohol addiction and how to deal with it yourself.” Most often, it is because of him or because of drugs that this disease appears and a loss of interest in life, a sober life.
- Emotional instability. Such people become very vulnerable, any little thing can cause a storm of indignation or resentment. At the same time, a sharp change of mood occurs, sometimes not at all corresponding to reality, or rather to the events taking place in it.
