There are reports of a very rapid spread of a new coronavirus variant called Omikron. The symptoms diagnosed in patients infected with the new strain of the virus are rather mild and different from the symptoms diagnosed in COVID-19 patients. The latest reports on the symptoms caused by the Omikron variant were presented by the doctor Angelique Coetzee from South Africa.

  1. The Omikron variant is a new variant of the coronavirus that causes mild and non-specific symptoms in young people
  2. So far, among the symptoms of patients infected with the Omikron variant, severe fatigue, headaches and body aches, as well as scratching in the throat have been noticed
  3. It is still unknown what course of the disease can be expected in the elderly and with comorbidities
  4. More information can be found on the Onet homepage

The Omikron variant is a new strain of the coronavirus that was first detected on November 11 in Botswana. In a short time, new cases of this variant were found, among others, in South Africa, Hong Kong, Israel, Belgium and Great Britain. Due to the large number of mutations and the high infectious potential, Omikron has come under the scrutiny of scientists. What characteristic symptoms have been identified so far in patients infected with the Omikron variant?

The course of infection with the Omikron variant is mild

So far, only mild symptoms of the disease have been found in people infected with the Omikron variant. Information on the condition of patients suffering from this variant of COVID-19 was provided by Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a South African doctor who was the first to raise the alarm over a new variant of the coronavirus.

As reported by Dr. Coetzee, her patients’ symptoms were atypical and milder than other COVID-19 patients she had treated. Very strong fatigue turned out to be a particularly noticeable symptom. There were also headaches and a scratchy throat. The doctor emphasizes that so far no serious cases of infection with the Omikron variant have been reported in South Africa. The disease is accompanied by very mild symptoms, and none of the patients required hospitalization.

However, it should be remembered that the picture of the Omikron variant at this point in time is based on the symptoms noted in a small group of patients. Dr. Coetzee’s patients were mostly men whose overall health was generally good. Nearly half of them were unvaccinated.

Symptoms of infection with the Omikron variant

The new form of the coronavirus causes a mild infection in young people. The Omikron variant can induce:

  1. very strong fatigue,
  2. slight headache,
  3. body aches,
  4. scratchy throat.

Dr. Coetzee also informed about the case of a six-year-old girl who was diagnosed with a fever and a very high pulse – the girl’s condition improved significantly after just two days. In patients infected with the Omikron variant, no cough or loss of smell and taste were observed. It is still unknown what symptoms the disease will cause in the elderly and with comorbidities.

Unlike the new variant of the coronavirus, the world’s widespread Delta variant often begins with a headache, which is accompanied by a classic sore throat over time, which may be accompanied by a high temperature and a runny nose. In the case of Delta, there are also gastrointestinal symptoms, including loss of appetite, abdominal pain and nausea.

Can Omikron endanger the elderly?

The symptoms of the Omikron variant confirmed so far allow for a preliminary determination of the potential course of the disease in young and healthy people. However, Dr. Coetzee bases his analysis on a small number of patients. As she emphasizes, the new variant of the coronavirus may still prove dangerous for the elderly and the unvaccinated. So we can see more severe cases of the disease caused by a new mutation in the future.
