What Symptoms Suggest Mastoiditis?

Hello. I am a mother of a 5-year-old and I wanted to find out and find out everything about the ailment that is referred to as mastoiditis. The son is from the group of those children who, unfortunately, often get sick, the most common infections upper respiratory tract. Very often, the son has middle ear infections. We are under the care of a general practitioner, but we have not yet visited an ENT specialist. During a recent visit, the doctor said my son might have mastoiditis.

I wanted to know more about this ailment. What are the symptoms of mastoiditis? Could mastoiditis pose a risk to my baby? Where exactly is the mastoid located? I fear that persistent ear infections and mastoid inflammation may have negative consequences. How is this type of disease treated, will antibiotics be required? I wonder if I should go with my son for additional specialist tests before visiting the ENT specialist. I am asking for a reliable tip and answer what exactly mastoiditis is.

The doctor explains the symptoms of mastoiditis

A complication of acute or chronic otitis media is the transition of the inflammatory process to adjacent structures, including the mastoid process. It is the most common complication of acute otitis media. This complication is especially common in children. The mastoid process belongs to the mastoid part of the temporal bone. It is located on both sides of the auricle. As a result of a bacterial infection, an inflammatory process develops in the pneumatic spaces inside the appendix. The most common bacteria that cause mastoiditis are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

It is tricky and gradually covers the bone walls between the cells of the appendix and the periosteum. The inflammatory process spreads through the veins. Symptoms of mastoiditis These include swelling, reddening of the skin on the appendix, protruding and shifted down the auricle, soreness in the appendage area, and usually symptoms of otitis. Sometimes mastoiditis can be the first sign of inflammation in the ear. Sometimes a subperiosteal abscess forms on the surface of the appendage and destroys its bone tissue. Unfortunately, despite the use of antibiotic therapy in otitis, complications often occur in the form of infection in the mastoid process.

Nevertheless, antibiotic therapy reduces the chance of complications. The diagnosis is made on the basis of an interview, examination of the patient, and reported complaints. Sometimes it is advisable to perform computed tomography, especially when intracranial complications are suspected. Mastoiditis can spread to the structures of the central nervous system. The choice of treatment depends on the clinical picture and the stage of the disease. Treatment initially begins with intravenous antibiotics and an incision in the eardrum. Surgical treatment is sometimes necessary. I suggest you consult an ENT specialist who, after getting to know the patient, will decide on further treatment and order additional tests to be performed.
