As long as death is a consequence of illness or old age and there are no elements of an unfortunate event, such as a car accident or a heart attack, there are symptoms that indicate that it will happen soon. Then changes appear in the body that ultimately lead to the stoppage of the work of the circulatory and respiratory systems, as well as the central nervous system.

In this short period, vital functions are extinguished and the necrophysical and chemical phenomena increase, which lead to irreversible biological death. The agony process takes place in several stages. In the first of them, the vital functions of the most important body systems are weakened (reduced life), in the second, the organism becomes even weaker (minimal life), and in the third, although vital functions are still present, they are so weak that one may get the impression that there has been until death (apparent death).

Physical and mental symptoms of impending death
Following cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest, the heart stops beating and leads to clinical death. Importantly, a few minutes after it, there is a chance to carry out resuscitation and restore the life of a dying person, but the brain must then retain some of its functions. If the work of the brain is permanently and irreversibly stopped, cerebral death occurs, which, in accordance with Polish law, causes the person to be considered dead.

Between biological death and brain death (and immediately after them), the so-called interletal reactions, ie the ability of tissues to respond to chemical, mechanical and physical stimuli. These reactions result from the different dying times of individual tissues and organs. Thanks to interletion reactions, it is possible to accurately determine the time of death of a given person, if not a day has passed since death.

The physical symptoms of agony are:
- sudden deterioration in health
- exhaustion of the body and significant general weakness that leads to the need to help the dying person even in minor activities, such as, for example, getting out of bed, giving food and drink
- less thirst and loss of appetite
- breathing disorders — difficulty catching breath, mouth breathing and so-called heavy breathing
- death rattle and moans
- feeling cold, cold chills
- drop in blood pressure
- fecal and urinary incontinence
- collapsing eyeballs and eyelid regurgitation
- pale skin
- tightening of facial features
- cold, sticky skin and spots appearing on the skin caused by blood stagnation (disturbances in the functioning of the blood system)
- cyanosis of the lips, fingers and toes
- shortness of breath, vomiting
- numbness and stiffness with associated pain from being immobilized
- excessive skin sensitivity to touch
- hypersensitivity to acoustic stimuli
Psychological symptoms of agony:
- disturbance of consciousness and increasing somnolence which may lead to coma
- restlessness, agitation, delirium
- withdrawal from both social and family life, with a very strong need to meet your loved ones
- auditory or visual hallucinations
- awareness of the impending death and communicating this fact to the environment, e.g. by saying the words “I’m dying”
- the appearance of unusual desires and behaviors, e.g. the desire to pack up and go on a trip
By noticing and correctly recognizing the symptoms of the impending death of a loved one, you can gain time to say goodbye to them and provide them with the most comfortable conditions that will allow them to leave in a dignified manner. Death is a very difficult experience not only for the person who is dying, but also for his family and loved ones.
