The main and most troublesome symptom of endometriosis is pain, which usually appears cyclically and intensifies over time. In addition to the characteristic severe pain during menstruation, the following may appear: perimenstrual pain, painful intercourse, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal pain, symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome, pain during bowel movements or urination. A common symptom is also chronic fatigue and infertility (in about 50% of patients with endometriosis). Chronic, worsening pain deteriorates a woman’s quality of life, affects her functioning in society and family, affects her mental health, causes depression and depressive symptoms. Patients are often hospitalized for exacerbation of pain, the appearance of ovarian endometrial cysts, and undergo surgical treatment.
