On December 14, registration for the COVID-19 vaccination for children between 5 and 11 starts. The first doses of Pfizer will be given to them on December 16. What kind of adverse vaccine reactions can be expected from the injection? We present the complete list.
- Children 5-11 years old are already receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, including in Israel
- In Poland, a significant proportion of parents are reluctant to vaccinate their young children against COVID-19, according to our survey
- Is there really anything to be afraid of? Clinical studies and an analysis of data from children who have already received the vaccine show that there is no cause for concern

Vaccinating children 5-11 years of age against COVID-19. From when, which preparation?
Until now, the youngest age group in Poland who could sign up for the COVID-19 vaccination were children between 12 and 17 years of age. This meant that children in kindergartens and lower graders in primary schools were not covered by protection against the coronavirus. Now the situation is finally changing.
From December 14, children 19-5 years old can already be enrolled for the COVID-11 vaccination. The first injections will be given from December 16. This means that if parents decided to vaccinate all children, kindergartens and schools would become much safer places. And the youngest ones would be protected against severe course, the risk of hospitalization and death as a result of the disease.

Children will receive two doses of Pfizer vaccine (these will be lower doses than for older age groups).

COVID-19. Adverse post-vaccination reactions in children 5-11 years old
Some parents of younger children are somewhat reluctant to enroll them for vaccinations. They fear adverse reactions to vaccination or are convinced that the coronavirus does not pose a threat to children, so there is no need to give them a COVID-19 preparation. Unfortunately, this argument does not stand up to reality – the Delta variant attacks younger and younger ones, and infected children do not always contract the infection mildly or asymptomatically.

As for NOPs, their scope was already checked at the stage of clinical trials. They covered 2 thousand. 268 children between 5 and 11 years of age, of which 1 517 received two reduced doses of Pfizer three weeks apart. 751 subjects received a placebo.
The most common adverse vaccine reactions in this group were:
- shoulder pain (it occurred in about 70% of children within a week of injection),
- fatigue (in 35%),
- headache (in 25% of the vaccinated).
NOPs after vaccination of children in the 5 – 11 year group. CDC data
Clinical trials have been conducted on a relatively small sample under laboratory conditions. However, we already have data collected as part of the “live experiment”, that is, from children who have already received Pfizer as part of the immunization program. It is a group of almost 5 million young people.

To date, no cases of myocarditis or pericarditis (which were a very rare side effect among young men, including adolescents) have been reported in younger children. The CDC has listed on its website a list of NOPs that may appear in children aged 5-11. They include:
- pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
- tiredness,
- Headache,
- muscle pain,
- chills,
- fever,
- nausea.
Why should children be vaccinated against COVID-19? The expert explains
Refraining from vaccinating children is a risky behavior, which was pointed out in an interview with Medonet by the contagious and pediatrician Dr. Lidia Stopyra.
“Virtually every child who is not vaccinated will get sick,” says Dr. Stopyra. – In this epidemiological situation there is no doubt about it. Most will get through this infection relatively mildly. Whether it will be my child – no parent can be so sure. If COVID-19 becomes more severe in the child, they will end up in a hospital, which is currently cramped, uncomfortable. At best, he or she will spend a few or several days in it.
Data from the USA indicate, however, that the infection does not always end with this several-day hospitalization.
– It may happen, however, that the health and life of a child will be endangered. When a toddler’s condition deteriorates, we never know in what direction it will develop. In the USA, several hundred children died due to COVID-19, and several dozen in Poland. Let this be a warning to all parents. By vaccinating your child, you will not be afraid for the health and life of your child. A fear that cannot be compared with anything else – adds Dr. Stopyra.
