Why might my period be late if i’m not pregnant? Could hormones or some serious diseases be responsible for menstrual disorders? Could not having a period be a result of losing weight? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
Why do menstruation stop?
Hello, this is Ewelina, I’m 43 years old. I have period problem. I don’t know why, but I’ve been late on my period for a while. This is the first time I’m seeing this. I am not in a relationship and therefore do not have intercourse with any man, so I canceled the possibility of getting pregnant right away. What, then, could be the cause of the late period? It has been suggested to me that it may be a hormonal disorder or some kind of disease. I also rather exclude these possibilities, because I am a physically active person, I take care of my health and have been vegan for about 4 months.
I was wondering if the reason for missing my period could be that I have lost a lot of weight recently? I am currently getting ready for a long journey and as my eating habits have changed, I have started going to the gym more and exercising quite vigorously 3 or 4 times a week. All this change resulted from excruciatingly stressful events that destroyed me a lot mentally. Therefore, is stress causing a missing period? There is nothing to hide, I am no longer the youngest woman, but for menopause, whatever it sounds like, I am probably still “too young”? Regards and thank you for your answer.
The doctor explains the possible reasons for the lack of a period
Madam, causes of amenorrhea there may be many. One of the most common is pregnancy, but as you mentioned yourself, we can rule it out. Other causes include a strict diet. Nutrient deficiency and a significant loss of adipose tissue affect menstrual irregularity or even complete disappearance. Excess physical exertion could also be the cause of your condition. Simply put, an exhausted body is not able to maintain homeostasis, i.e. internal balance, which is manifested, among others, by menstrual disorders, but also by electrolyte deficiencies and a weakened immune system.
Often the fact that chronic stress or a sudden severe stress reaction can disturb menstruation. This is due to an excess of steroid hormones such as cortisol. When talking about stress, it is also worth mentioning work, especially excess work or shift work. Working at night is particularly harmful, as it disturbs the circadian rhythm and thus disrupts it organism homeostasis.
It is a pity that you did not provide any information about your health condition and the medications used. Certain medications, such as antidepressants and sleeping pills, can cause these problems.
A whole range of diseases can be distinguished that can disturb the regularity of menstruation. These include diseases of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, diseases of the thyroid gland, in particular its hypothyroidism, and diabetes. As you also mentioned, improper hormonal balance disrupts menstruation. An excess of prolactin and testosterone as well as a deficiency of hypothalamic, pituitary or ovarian hormones have a negative impact on the menstrual cycle.
Malnutrition and anemia as well as eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia, should also be associated with the change of diet. There are several possible causes in your case, mostly related to your lifestyle. So I suggest you change your current habits and if your menstruation does not return, go to the gynecologist.
