What are the problems of families with an autistic child?

The basic problem of families with children with autism is the lack of access to diagnostic and therapeutic centers. There are too few of them in our country, the waiting time for a diagnosis is often many months, during which the child’s condition worsens and the symptoms worsen. In many places, the diagnosis is not made until the child is three years old, because parents are persuaded to wait that perhaps “the child will grow up”.

There are no therapeutic centers where both the child and his family would be provided with comprehensive care and support. It happens that parents are offered therapies that support the overall development of the child, but are not focused on the specific problems of the child resulting from autism. As a rule, therapy is payable, expensive. Many families need financial support to pay for therapy.

The ignorance of the specificity of the problems and needs of people with autism through the environment is a great difficulty. The average person has mostly never heard of autism at all. As a result, strange behavior of a child on the street or in a shop, the mere fact that a large child does not speak at the playground, plays with e.g. a twig, causes unpleasant comments and remarks from others. Parents feel helpless and abandoned. It happens that they limit the child’s leaving home, they give up meetings with friends, because these situations are very difficult and stressful for them and for children with autism.

Also, specialists (doctors, psychologists, educators) and employees of aid institutions do not have adequate knowledge about autistic spectrum disorders. The consequence are difficulties in obtaining appropriate support, benefits, and difficulties in finding properly prepared educational institutions (kindergartens and schools) for children. In the case of adults with autism, especially those with profound functional disorders, the problem is to provide them with XNUMX-hour care and rehabilitation.

There is also a lack of support and solutions for high-functioning people with autism and Asperger’s syndrome, who, with often a little help from an assistant, could be largely independent, do well both in schools and work well.
