What can elevated lymphocytes in pregnancy indicate? Could it be a symptom of diseases? Is high lymphocyte count a cause for concern? What other symptoms should I be concerned about? What is worth paying attention to? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What do elevated lymphocytes in pregnancy indicate?
Hello and welcome. I am 26 years old and currently in the sixth month of pregnancy. However, I am concerned about the results of my recent research. I was doing the tests my doctor ordered and he made me nervous elevated lymphocyte result. Never before in tests had lymphocytes above normal, everything was always fine, and now suddenly such a disturbing result. As evidenced by elevated lymphocytes in pregnancy? Is this a symptom of any problems or diseases? Or maybe I shouldn’t be worried after all high lymphocytes in pregnancy?
I have no other ailments, I feel good, but I don’t know what other symptoms accompany elevated lymphocytes in pregnancy – should I feel bad somehow? Because maybe I don’t pay attention to some symptoms, and I should. I will also be grateful for the information what to do with increased lymphocytes in pregnancy? Will my doctor recommend any additional tests, or is there some way to treat high lymphocytes in pregnancy? I am a bit afraid of these results, because so far everything was fine and I did not expect such bad results, especially since my lymphocytes were normal throughout my pregnancy.
The doctor explains what the increased lymphocytes in pregnancy may indicate
During pregnancy, there are many changes in the woman’s body – not only in the growing circumference of the abdomen, but also, inter alia, about the composition of the blood. Any laboratory norms that we see on test results are appropriate for the average woman who is not pregnant. Therefore, you should not compare your results to the standards we see on the sheet, because they may turn out to be inadequate to the state in which we are.
During pregnancy, there is usually an increase in the number of white blood cells or leukocytes (referred to as WBC in morphology). Leukocytosis is caused by the fact that the body of a pregnant woman recognizes a foreign body in our body, which is the fetus, and therefore begins to produce more white blood cells, and neutrophils (a type of white blood cells) survive longer. In turn, the lymphocyte pool decreases in the first and second trimesters and increases in the third trimester. Monocytes, on the other hand, are at their highest level in early pregnancy, and decrease the closer to delivery. Eosinophils and basophils do not decrease significantly throughout pregnancy.
Other hematological changes occurring during pregnancy include an increase in blood volume, even by half – this is our physiological mechanism of preparation for blood loss during childbirth and the need to supply blood to the growing organ which is the uterus (as much as about a liter of blood is in the uterus and maternal bearing parts!).
The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes, referred to as RBC in the blood count) also increases, but due to the dilution of the blood there is a relative decrease in hemoglobin of 1-2 g / dL, usually around the end of the second or the beginning of the third trimester. This is a physiological change that occurs during pregnancy and should not be worried about. If your anemia is deeper than allowed, the attending physician or obstetrician will certainly pay attention to it.
I hope that I have explained why you should not get too stressed when you see when a parameter in the morphology is greater or less than its recommended range in the standards listed on the sheet.
