What can elevated lymphocytes in a child indicate? Could an elevated lymphocyte count indicate an immune problem? Does a high score indicate a serious medical condition? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What does a high lymphocyte count in a child show?
Good day. Yesterday I received my six-year-old daughter’s test results and there was one thing that bothered me a lot. Therefore, I would like to ask for an answer as evidenced by elevated lymphocytes in a child? In the research results, they are the only indicator that goes beyond the norms high lymphocytes. It worries me a bit, because my daughter has had problems with immunity for some time and that’s why we decided to do additional tests. Could an elevated level of lymphocytes in a child be a sign of immunity problems?
Or maybe the elevated lymphocytes are a symptom of some more serious disease that does not yet give other symptoms. What could they be causes of elevated lymphocytes in children in this age? I read some very disturbing information about the fact that high lymphocytes can be a symptom of leukemia and I got a little scared, but unfortunately the visit to the doctor who will examine my daughter thoroughly in a few days. Therefore, I would like to know now whether the increased level of lymphocytes in a child is really dangerous, or whether it may be related to immunity and previous infections in my daughter. I will be obliged to answer my questions.
The doctor indicates possible causes of elevated lymphocytes in the child
Madam, unfortunately you have given too little specific information. You should write down the exact result of the morphology, what is wrong with your daughter and what you meant when you wrote about problems with immunity. In children, lymphocytosis, i.e. an increased number of lymphocytes in the blood, most often indicates viral diseases. These can be common colds or flu, but also childhood diseases such as rubella, mumps or measles that keep coming back (unfortunately, there is a trend to abandon the vaccination of children by irresponsible parents who believe in anti-vaccine movements).
In addition to the aforementioned viral infections, lymphocytosis is also observed in the case of chronic bacterial infections, including tuberculosis, whooping cough, diphtheria and syphilis, and in chronic infection with HBV and HCV. High level of lymphocytes is also observed in hyperthyroidism, Crohn’s disease, chronic allergic conditions, as well as in toxoplasmosis and mononucleosis.
Unfortunately, in differentiating the causes of lymphocytosis, neoplastic diseases, especially leukemias and lymphomas, should always be taken into account. Also for adults, multiple myeloma. When it comes to further diagnostics, the decision will be made by the doctor in charge of your daughter. It all depends on what the disease entity is suspected of. I suggest that you repeat your morphology before going to your appointment and then present both results to the doctor.
