What are leukocytes? How are the results interpreted? What is the evidence of a high level of leukocytes during pregnancy? Can high leukocytes be a threat to pregnancy? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What do elevated leukocytes mean during pregnancy?

Good day. My wife is pregnant. We’ve been trying to get a baby for a long time and finally succeeded, probably in a few months we will have a baby girl, although this is not certain yet. However, I would like to know what they testify to elevated leukocytes in pregnancy? This result showed up in my wife’s recent research. The doctor told her that for now there is no need to worry and the tests will be repeated soon, but I can’t shake the thought that something might happen to my wife or our baby.

As evidenced by the increased pregnant leukocytes? Does this result mean that my pregnancy is at risk? Or is it due to some illness of the wife or child? I do not want to ask the doctor not to talk about it in front of my wife and not to worry her, I try not to mention it in front of her so as not to be nervous, but this result does not give me peace and I do not know if I can wait for the repeated examination in peace to find out something. Can I get an answer? Thank you in advance and best regards.

The doctor explains, as indicated by the high level of leukocytes in pregnancy

Sir, you wrote that your wife’s leukocytes are elevated, but what is the exact concentration? Your term is very general. It is a pity that you did not provide more information about your wife’s health condition, whether she is currently suffering from something or is ill. Leukocytes during pregnancy may be elevated and this is not a disturbing symptom. It is different if there are symptoms. Most often, leukocytes grow as a result of infectious diseases, including infections of the respiratory, digestive and urinary systems.

If an infection is suspected in pregnant women, the morphology should be examined in addition to the morphology CRP protein concentration and perform a urinalysis. Of course, apart from trivial viral infections, leukocytes may also increase as a result of the development of a cancerous disease – leukemia or lymphoma. However, these are very rare causes, but must also be considered in the differential diagnosis.

As I wrote above, if the spouse is okay and does not present any disturbing symptoms such as fever, cough or malaise, I do not see any cause for concern. However, if the health of your wife worries you, you should go to the family doctor or gynecologist and perform the tests ordered by the doctor. I will also mention that in pregnant women there are many changes in the body, including the hematopoietic and circulatory systems.

Increases blood volume, mainly due to an increase in the amount of plasma, not blood cells. ESR and leukocyte counts increase (generally no more than 15 per cubic millimeter). Hemoglobin levels and platelet counts decrease. The activity of the clotting factors is increased, so that during pregnancy there is an increased risk of venous thrombosis and its related complications, including pulmonary embolism.

I have only presented some of the changes that take place in the pregnant woman’s body. I propose to read the articles explaining the physiological changes that occur in pregnant women. It will certainly make it easier for you to understand your wife’s current state of health.
