What are triglycerides? What are their functions in the human body? What is the evidence of increased triglyceride levels? Should the test be repeated? Is the result related to the diet used? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What influences high triglyceride levels?
Hello. I have recently decided to do blood tests prophylactically. I decided to do it privately, went and got the results of, among others, lipid profile. I wanted to do this test because I am slightly obese and worried about elevated cholesterol. My results are generally good, but it worried me elevated triglycerides.
And here my question arises – what are the evidence of increased triglycerides? Could such a result indicate some disease and should I see a doctor immediately or maybe it would be better to repeat the examination calmly and check if the results repeat? I would also like to ask whether the increased level of triglycerides in the study may be caused by poor nutrition in the last days.
I ate a lot of fatty foods and gained some weight, and I wonder if this could be related to my test result. I am worried because my family history of obesity and related diseases is a common problem. I will be grateful for your response. Regards.
The doctor explains what influences the high level of triglycerides
Triglycerides are esters of glycerol and fatty acids. They are the main component of adipose tissue in the body. Their normal fasting blood concentration is below 150 mg / dl, and not below 175 mg / dl in the fasting state. Elevated triglycerides are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We observe a high concentration of triglycerides in atherogenic dyslipidemia. Then it is accompanied by a decreased concentration of HDL cholesterol.
Additionally, LDL lipoptroteins are abnormally constructed. This metabolic disorder is common in obese and type 2 diabetics. Elevated triglycerides occur in metabolic syndrome, chylomicronemia syndrome, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism, kidney failure, nephrotic syndrome, or medications for other diseases.
Before taking blood for the test, which will perform the lipid profile, you should prepare. The test should be performed on an empty stomach, at least 12 hours after the last meal. In the meantime, you can drink water. It is not recommended to modify your current diet for a few days before the examination. Alcohol consumption can significantly distort the study picture. Therefore, we should refrain from accepting it.
Elevated triglycerides are often found in obese people. Usually, other metabolic disorders are also accompanied. In this case, it is recommended to modify the lifestyle by introducing an appropriate diet, normalizing body weight, and adding moderate-intensity physical activity. You should refrain from consuming alcohol.
Check your triglyceride levels regularly with LipidPro – a device for determining the lipid profile with strips, which you can buy at Medonet Market.
It is recommended to increase the consumption of fish, e.g. salmon, herring, mackerel, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which lower the concentration of triglycerides. The diet should include a lot of fresh vegetables, fruit, wholemeal bread, groats. You should give up simple sugars in the form of cakes, pale bread, sweets.
If concentration of triglycerides it is significant, sometimes pharmacological treatment is necessary.
Please go to your primary care physician with the test results. You may need to do your research again. The doctor will verify whether you have additional risk factors for cardiovascular disease and decide whether to initiate treatment.
