What are the consequences of visceral fat?

Visceral fat, located around the abdomen, is not only an aesthetic problem, but also a health problem. Abdominal obesity increases the likelihood of many diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. What could be the reasons for a build-up of stubborn belly fat?

Does age cause obesity?

Our body changes over the years. Many times I hear voices: ‘I’ve always been slim, I didn’t have to be careful about what I eat, and now I have a huge problem with fat on my stomach.’ That’s true. First, the metabolic rate decreases with age, so we have to eat less and less to maintain our current body weight. Then comes the menopause, which adds fuel to the fire. What’s worse, the unwanted fat is then very easily deposited in the waist. The reason for this inconvenience is hormonal changes – the level of estrogen and progesterone decreases, and at the same time, however, the amount of testosterone decreases much more slowly.

How to exercise to lose belly weight?

It turns out that colloquially known as ‘cardio’ training is a bit overrated, especially if you want to get rid of belly fat. Most trainers recommend combining strength training with ‘cardio’. Thanks to this, our metabolism will increase, which will also help in reducing visceral fat. In a study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, people who chose high-intensity training lost more abdominal fat, compared with moderate-intensity exercise.

Does processed food cause obesity?

White bread, salty snacks, fried dishes, refined sugar in sweetened drinks and desserts increase inflammation in the body. And it is visceral fat that is associated with inflammation. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are full of antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties, so they can be helpful against belly rollers.

What food causes obesity?

Studies show a relationship between high levels of saturated fat in the diet and an increase in visceral fat. On the other hand, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects and help to break down belly fat. Which products to choose then? Mostly olive oil, avocados, as well as fatty fish, nuts and seeds.

How does stress affect obesity?

There are people who cannot swallow anything under stress, and there are also people who eat donut after donut. However, although we do not react, cortisol is released during stress, which increases the tendency to accumulate fat around the abdomen, and what is worse, increases the size of fat cells.

Does a short sleep cause obesity?

It is not only stress and bad eating habits that affect the size of our waist. A study of 70.000 women found that those who sleep no more than five hours a night are down by 30 percent. more likely to be overweight and obese than those who sleep 7 hours. The National Institutes of Health suggests adults get seven to eight hours of sleep a night.
