Why do your toes hurt? Could the pain in your toes be related to orthopedic problems? Which specialist should you go to? Could it be a symptom of rheumatic diseases? What tests are worth doing? The questions are answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What are the reasons for pain in the toes?
Hello, my problem is unusual and I don’t even know which doctor to go to with him, so I would be grateful for your answer. It is about pain in the toesor rather its causes. My toes have been aching for some time, especially when I walk longer, but this problem also occurs when I’m at home and in the morning when I wake up. I downplayed it at first, but the pain in my toes is becoming more and more frequent. What are the causes pain in the toes? Is it an orthopedic issue and should I see a doctor with pain in my toes?
Or maybe the pain in your toes is a symptom of rheumatic diseases? I’m only 35 years old, my test results are always normal, but the pain in my toes is bothering me. It is very onerous because it makes it difficult for me to function normally. I even changed my shoes to very comfortable ones, without heels, but the pain in my toes does not stop, and even occurs more and more often. I once read that the cause of toe pain is gout – can the pain in the toes really be the result of this ailment? How should I diagnose it, what tests should I do to find out the causes of pain in my toes?
The doctor explains the causes of pain in the toes
Toe pain can be caused by many causes, the most common being too much sports or wearing too tight shoes. For other reasons, less common and where other symptoms usually also occur: broken finger or toes (plus signs of swelling, redness or bruising), Reynaud’s disease – this usually affects the fingers but can also affect the toes ( in addition, there is a feeling of numbness and tingling when feeling cold, stressed; the color of the fingers may change), gout – classically applies to the big toe and then we call it gout.
In the case of gout, there is sudden pain, a feeling of stiffness, redness and increased warming of the skin over the finger or toe joint. If you suspect that you have gout, see your GP, who will be able to order the appropriate tests to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment. In the case described by you, the symptoms do not indicate that gout was the cause of the ailments, but if there is a family predisposition to this disease, it is worth visiting a doctor.
However, if the symptoms do not reflect any of the above-mentioned diseases, and there is only pain in the fingers, without their cooling down, give your legs a break often, lift them up, cover the sore areas with ice for half an hour to 2-3h / day, put on wide, comfortable shoes, with a low heel and a well-shaped sole. You can also try regular, gentle stretching exercises. Do not walk or stand for long periods of time, and do not wear high-heeled shoes with a pointed toe.
Ask your pharmacist for advice on what pain reliever to take, wear orthopedic shoe insoles. However, if the pain has not resolved after about two weeks of home treatment, the pain is difficult or impossible to do daily activities, it worsens or recurs, no feeling in the feet or if you develop diabetes, see your GP.
The cause of pain in the toes may also be their deformation and overlapping. If the little toe is problematic, it is worth purchasing a special wedge with a ring and a little finger guard, thanks to which we will separate the little toe, allowing it to be properly positioned. If several fingers are affected, choose Guarded Gel Little Finger Separators.
