What are the causes of anal pruritus?

The anus is a very sensitive area which can be itchy for various reasons. There are several causes that can explain anal pruritus and it is necessary to identify them in order to offer you the appropriate treatment.

First of all, you should know that consultations for itching in the anal region are frequent: there is no reason to be ashamed of going to your doctor to treat a problem with itchy buttocks. Once the awkward moment has passed, you can heal yourself and put an end to these little ailments that are capable of spoiling your daily life. Several causes can cause itching, here they are:

Poor hygiene

Personal hygiene that is poorly or too infrequently performed can be the cause of the itching. That is why it is important to clean this area well in order to remove all traces of stool. The latter can indeed settle in the folds of the anus, in particular during poor wiping after defecation.

The ideal? Install Japanese toilets also called “washlet” which, thanks to their lukewarm water jets, effectively clean the buttocks. Toilets that we are not used to in Europe but which ensure impeccable hygiene. You can also use a bidet if your bathroom has one.

Too aggressive soap

The anal area is naturally oily and acts as a barrier to protect against irritation and infection. However, the skin and anal mucous membranes can deteriorate and become “raw” if you cleanse too often or too intensely.

So change the soap and choose a mild one that is not stripping. At last do not forget to adopt the right gesture by washing yourself delicately from front to back and not the other way around. Then dry this area thoroughly.

Eczema

Eczema is a skin disease that can be very itchy at times. It is characterized by vesicular plaques located on the legs, arms, hands, feet, face, behind the ears but also in the anus.

Even if it is not visible, eczema in the anal area can be very painful and is often due to an allergy: toilet paper, wipe, cream, lubricant, latex, synthetic underwear … To relieve this anal itching, your doctor will prescribe a corticosteroid cream.

Pinworms

Pinworms are thin, white worms, ranging in size from 3 to 12 mm.  The females lay eggs which will lodge around the anus and it is they who are the cause of the anal itching.

Pinworms mainly affect children who suck their thumbs after scratching their buttocks, for example, or having eaten contaminated food. But adults are not immune either because these little worms are easily transmitted from person to person. Only solution : buy dewormer, over-the-counter in pharmacies and treat all family members. Repeat the operation 15 days later and do not forget to wash everything that is in contact with the anus (underwear, pajamas, towels, sheets, etc.).

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are the veins that supply blood to the rectal area. They sometimes become swollen and painful and we speak of hemorrhoidal crises.. They can be accompanied by blood and itching.

In order to avoid a hemorrhoidal crisis, it is advisable not to eat spicy foods or to drink certain drinks (alcohol, tea, coffee) and finally, to adopt a diet rich in fiber. It is indeed important to facilitate its transit and to soften its stools, if necessary, with laxatives.

Mycosis or bacteria

Anal pruritus can also be due to a yeast infection: Candida albican, an intestinal yeast that develops after taking medications for a long time, especially. If your itching is caused by this fungus, your doctor will prescribe specific antibiotic treatment to eliminate it.

It is also possible that bacteria such as staphylococci or streptococcus aureus are causing itching in the anus. It happens that streptococcus aureus settles on the base of a hair and causes a boil. Again, you will be offered antibiotic treatment, or even an incision.
