What do sub-normal neutrophils mean?

Hello and welcome. I have a question about neutrophils. I would like to ask what they testify to subnormal neutrophils? This is the result that came out of my recent research. I note that I suffer from hyperthyroidism and know that subnormal neutrophils are sometimes associated with this condition. I do, however problems with an overactive thyroid gland I have been around for many years and regularly under test neutrophil result was correct. This time, however, the neutrophils were well below normal in my results.

What can this be about? Is it a matter of developing thyroid problems or is there a chance that something disturbing is happening in my body? I am worried because I found information on the internet that subnormal neutrophils may be related to leukemia. Since then, I can’t help but think that I am sick and that something is wrong. Should I see a doctor with my problems? Or maybe repeat the tests? And whether sub-normal neutrophils can actually be a sign of leukemia, or is there no point in making such a thesis on the basis of one study? Please reply.

The doctor explains what sub-normal neutrophils mean

Ladies and Gentlemen, the causes of neutropenia, and therefore reduced the amount of neutrophilia in the blood There are many. When asking a question, you should write what the exact result of the test is, along with other parameters of the blood count. Additionally, you should provide information about your health condition and the medications you take, which is crucial in further proceedings.

It is assumed that the correct amount of neutrophilia in the blood is 1800-8000 / microlitre, although these values may vary depending on the laboratory. As I mentioned causes of neutropenia there may be many, but the most common are viral infections, primarily flu, rubella or chicken pox. In addition to neutropenia, lymphocytosis, i.e. an increased number of lymphocytes in the blood, is observed.

Such abnormalities in morphology are temporary and should not be alarming. In addition to viral infections, neutropenia can result from medications, including cytostatics, antiepileptic drugs, antibiotics, and antithyroid drugs. Hence the neutropenia in your case.

Unfortunately, apart from mild conditions, life-threatening diseases, such as leukemias or lymphomas, as well as aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes or autoimmune diseases can lead to a reduction in the number of neutrophils in the blood. Life-threatening neutropenia is rare, but your doctor should check anyway, so I suggest that you do your morphology again and see your GP with the result.
