What do red blood cells mean in urine? Are fresh erythrocytes the same as regular erythrocytes in the urine? What can their presence in urine mean? Is it worth consulting these results with a doctor? Is this a cause for concern? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

What do erythrocytes fresh in the urine show?

Hello. I recently did blood and urine tests. Due to the fact that I do them regularly (I’m 46 now), I usually know more or less what results to expect and what they mean. This year also most of the results did not surprise me, everything is quite normal, but I was concerned about the fact that fresh red blood cells appeared in my urine. What are erythrocytes fresh in the urine? I honestly admit that I have not met such a date so far.

Are red blood cells fresh in urine and normal red blood cells in urine any different or are they exactly the same? And first of all, I would like to ask what are fresh urine erotrocytes and what can they mean? I am worried because so far my results have practically always been correct and now these fresh red blood cells have appeared that are bothering me. I tried to read about it on the internet a bit, I admit that sometimes I use different websites and advice, but I could not find much information. Should I see a doctor with this result? Is there any cause for concern?

The doctor explains what erythrocytes are fresh in the urine

Apart from erythrocytes, there are many other parameters in the urinalysis that lead us to the cause of the disease. In addition, it is very important to have a history of symptoms, past illnesses, family history and to conduct a physical examination. It is thanks to the whole picture that the doctor can decide what is really wrong with the patient. The doctor should treat the patient, not the results.

The norm in the general examination is the number of erythrocytes in the field of view of less than 3. A greater number of them may indicate contamination of the sample with, for example, blood from menstruation (enough invisible to the human eye!). However, if, after excluding the occurrence of menstruation, inter-monthly bleeding from the genital tract, or after repeating the test in the period between menstruation, fresh erythrocytes are still present, they may cause pathologies in the lower part of the urinary system, i.e. the urinary bladder and urethra.

The most common cause is infection – inflammation of the bladder or urethra. Usually, these conditions are accompanied by symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation when urinating, fever, waking up while sleeping to go to the toilet, or urethral leakage. Other, less common causes of fresh red blood cells in the urinalysis are sexual activity or intense exercise, which may result in irritation of the external urethra.

As mentioned above – it is recommended to visit the doctor ordering the test, he will be able to re-interview, physically examine and look at other laboratory test results, deviations from the norms – also in the general urine test, because the mere finding of fresh erythrocytes in the urine does not authorize the diagnosis no disease entity, it can only be an indication in which direction to further diagnose the patient. The doctor will also be able to order further laboratory tests, radiographs or refer you to a specialist.
