What does the term chelate mean? What is iron chelate? Is chelating more effective than normal iron? Will iron chelate be better absorbed by the body? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What is iron chelate?
Good morning, I would like to ask what are chelates? I have been supplementing iron for some time because I am quite deficient. I have heard recently that chelating would be much preferable in my case. However, I have no idea what chelates are, and actually what they are iron chelate? I would like to try such a supplementation, because the current one is very slow iron levels, and I have problems with it, among other things, as a result of heavy periods.
Therefore, I wonder if chelates are effective and can actually be better absorbed by the body? Can I change my supplements myself and start using chelates without consulting a doctor, but should I make an appointment first and ask for a change in my medications? Do chelates have any side effects I should watch out for, or are there any contraindications for the use of chelateswhich I should know about? I am very interested in this topic, but I have not found reliable information on what chelates are, how to use chelates and for whom chelates are indicated, so I would be very grateful for dispelling my doubts on this topic.
The doctor explains what chelates are and how to apply
Iron is an element that plays an important role in the human body. Iron is part of hemoglobin, a protein that transports oxygen in the blood. It is commonly seen in patients iron deficiencies. They arise for many reasons. Iron deficiency in the body may be caused by insufficient supply of an element with food, impaired absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract, increased demand or excessive loss of an element. Iron deficiency in the blood causes anemia.
Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia mainly include weakness, poor exercise tolerance, headaches, increased heart rate, pale skin and mucous membranes, distorted appetite, changes in the tongue. The severity of anemia symptoms depends on the severity of the disease. It is important to prevent iron deficiency also in children, which could contribute to disturbing their development. The mainstay of treating iron deficiency is iron supplementation.
Oral preparations are the most commonly used. Iron preparations are best absorbed on an empty stomach. Sometimes, in order to reduce side effects, it is recommended to take them after a meal. Iron chelates are complex compounds in which iron is combined with other molecules. This relationship is more durable, which should result in more effective treatment. Is it really so – experts’ opinions are divided. Treatment should be tailored to the patient’s needs and often the budget.
The price of the treatment, depending on the preparation, can vary significantly. By iron supplementation it is recommended to avoid dietary foods that are high in phytates, phosphates or tannates (e.g. cereals, beans). Foods rich in vitamin C increase the absorption of iron. It is also beneficial to eat pickled products, e.g. cabbage, cucumbers, which also have a positive effect on the process of iron absorption. I suggest you consult your doctor if you want to change your treatment.
