What a House That Neighbors Hate Looks Like: 12 Vivid Photos

The 70-year-old artist has decided to transform her oceanfront mansion into a work of art. Not everyone appreciated. For some, this masterpiece is painful to look at.

A home in Santa Barbara, California surrounded by greenery and ocean views is a dream come true. But the artist Jane Gottlieb decided it was a boring dream: what kind of walls, painted in shades of beige. Just melancholy, and Jane has always loved bright colors. And this, by the way, is perfectly visible in her paintings. Without thinking twice, the artist decided to turn her house into the same work of art as her painting. It turned out brightly. It seems even too much.

The exterior of the house is painted in 9 different colors. And inside there is even more variegation. It took Jane two months to paint the outer walls with all the colors of the rainbow. She spends a lot of money every year to keep the mansion in such a vibrant state, because the paint fades very quickly under the bright Californian sun.

“My guests and passers-by like the house very much. And I like their stunned faces, because people smile when they look at my house. They say that they have never seen anything like it, that this is just an amazing house in which it is impossible to feel unhappy, – laughs Jane. “Some even call it the Easter home.”

This is what the living room of Jane’s Easter house looks like.

But the neighbors are not happy with her masterpiece. In the opinion of the residents of the surrounding houses, Jane’s parrot mansion does not at all fit into the general architectural concept of the coast. All other houses are painted in the traditional light shades of sand and beige. No wonder Jane’s creation looks like some kind of purple madness in the midst of restrained brethren.

“I don’t understand why people love all these nondescript tones so much. The world seems to be obsessed with beige and brown. I love bright, colorful colors, ”Jane shrugs.

Since the artist and her husband moved to the mansion, it has become brighter every year. Light green and lavender colors, purple and lilac, lemon yellow and bright turquoise – it seems that nothing brown and sandy in the house is left at all.

“This is my three-dimensional work of art, decorated with my paintings. I am proud of my home, I love it, and I am very happy that I live in this beautiful place, ”says Jane.
