What a child should be able to do at 1 year old
By the time they are one year old, children should have a certain set of skills. So what should a child be able to do at 1 year old? Is your baby developing on time?
Only a year has passed, and your baby has grown from a helpless tender lump into a fully formed little man. The period of infancy is over. The child is still at the beginning of the path, but how many stages of development he went through, how much he learned!
The child’s weight has increased by about 3–3,5 times. And if in the first months the baby added 400-600 grams, then starting from the year his weight should increase on average by about 200-250 grams per month.
As a rule, everything that a child should be able to do in a year, he has mastered: he stands confidently on his legs, walks, can try to run, holding a hand, goes up and down the stairs, carries light objects with both hands – a plate, a doll, a ball, etc.
By the time a baby is one year old, it should have 12 teeth. But do not panic if not all 12 have erupted. They will appear, it is important to provide the baby with a balanced diet, in which there will be a sufficient amount of calcium, phosphorus and vitamins.
Mental and emotional development
When assessing these parameters, it is worth focusing on the average indicators of what a child should be able to do per year. As a rule, the kid knows how to express agreement and disagreement, to understand the emotions of the parents and the word “no”, you can already negotiate with him. The kid is already sensitive to the intonation of the speech of adults.
By this age, the child has the beginnings of the ability to generalize. For example, the word “lala” he calls not only his doll, but also a girl met in the street in a stroller, or an image in a picture of a small child or a doll. If he sees a crying child, he can, “generalizing”, join the crying out of sympathy.
Some children by the age of one may report that they want to potty.
One-year-old children are very interested in books. The child is happy to show the animals, asks to turn the pages to see a new picture.
In a year, the baby perceives simple melodies, a sense of rhythm is formed in him. He knows how to play goodies, “magpie-crow”, dance.
During the first year of life, the child’s memory develops well, at this time he easily remembers the names of objects, the names of close adults and children, likes to look out the window behind the movement of people, animals and vehicles. Therefore, he knows the names of the objects around him, toys, clothes, face, body parts and knows how to show them. By the age of one, a child should pronounce 5-10 words: “mom”, “dad”, “baba”, “lala”, “dai”, “af-af”, “bb”, and other onomatopoeia.
If this is not the case, do not rush to get upset. It is considered the norm when:
– girls start talking earlier than boys,
– a vocabulary of 5-10 words appears in crumbs in the period from 12 to 15 months – it all depends on the individual characteristics of the child’s development,
– in families where there is a predisposition to delayed speech development, it is inherited. An experienced speech therapist, when working with a child who does not speak, will always ask if there have been such cases in the family.
To stimulate and support the baby’s speech development, be sure to talk to him, correctly, slowly and clearly pronouncing words, without whining. Comment on your actions (“Let’s put on a jacket”, “Now we’ll wash our eyes, cheeks”), try to establish a dialogue with the baby, pausing so that he can answer, or show your answer with a facial expression, gesture (“Where is our spoon? Right, on the table our spoon “).
Read aloud to your baby as much as possible, especially poetry. Encourage and praise the end of lines. In a year, a child can pick up and complete a familiar line of a rhyme. Teach him how to blow, show how you fold your lips and blow (a useful exercise for the correct pronunciation of the sounds “s”, “w”, “z”)
For children of one year old, games that involve fine motor skills are very useful. Such games contribute to both the ability to work with your hands and the development of speech. And since during this period the baby is actively exploring the cabinets – sorting through things, rattling pots, examines the contents of packages and cans, be patient and do not stop him.
And if a child a year should be able to pronounce 5-10 words, then by the age of one and a half his vocabulary increases to 50 words. The baby knows how to follow simple instructions of two commands: “take a towel and dry your hands.”
