The outbreak of tropical West Nile fever has killed five people in the Volgograd region, where at least 116 people contracted the disease, sanitary services in the region in southern European Our Country said on Tuesday.
116 people infected with the West Nile virus (WNV) have been registered, five of whom have died, the spokesman for the sanitary services (Rospotrebnadzor) in Volgograd said.
Every day there are 6 to 10 cases of infection with the virus, spread by mosquitoes, according to the website of Volgograd Rospotrebnadzor.
Three cases of infection were also registered in the Voronezh region, the local sanitary services reported.
The record heat that hit Our Country, especially its southern areas, where the temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius after two months of rain, are conducive to the hatching of mosquitoes. According to Rospotrebnadzor, they multiplied 20 times more than last year.
In this area, two million people are exposed to mosquito bites and potential WNV infection. Authorities ordered increased insecticidal spraying and disinfection of water reservoirs.
West Nile fever also appeared in Greece, where four people died of it (PAP)
