Daphne mezereum L. is a protected plant. The bush grows in thickets. It blooms from March to April. The fruits ripen in June and July.

The whole plant, fresh and dried, is very poisonous, especially the phloem and fruit. Poisoning can occur with contact with dust, especially the bark. The toxic component of the plant has a sharp, burning taste and a strong irritating effect. In children, eating 1-2 berries can cause severe poisoning. High mortality! The poison is absorbed through the skin and gastrointestinal tract, it is highly irritating locally and generally systemically as a result of its influence on the central nervous system, circulatory system and kidneys.

Symptoms of poisoning

There is inflammation upon contact with the skin: redness, swelling, blisters, and in severe cases skin ulceration. The mucosa of the digestive tract and conjunctiva reacts in a similar way. In the case of oral poisoning, inflammatory changes in the mouth and the further part of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines), pain in the mouth and stomach, drooling, thirst, dysphagia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, sometimes bloody.

General symptoms: headache, dizziness, agitation, fever, increased heart rate, weakness, shortness of breath, convulsions in children, difficulty urinating, haematuria, circulatory failure and death.

First aid

Wash skin and conjunctiva with water, rinse mouth. Give milk and / or egg white to drink. Quickly transport the poisoned person to hospital.
