Welder’s Day 2023: the history and traditions of the holiday
It is difficult to imagine an industry where metal would not be used and the services of a welder would not be needed. This profession is in high demand. When the Day of the welder is celebrated in 2023, what are its history and traditions – read in our material

Metal structures surround a person everywhere. We encounter them at home, in offices and in transport. Welding is used in agriculture, construction, engineering, energy, metallurgy, shipbuilding, oil refining and other important industries. The reliability, safety and strength of various structures and devices depend on the skill of the welder. This profession requires precision, care and concentration, and a mistake can affect the quality of work and lead to an accident. The KP tells when and how the Welder’s Day will be celebrated in Our Country in 2023.

When is the Day of the welder in Our Country

The date of the holiday is floating. Welder’s Day in Our Country is celebrated on the last Friday of spring. In 2023, it will have to 26 May.

history of the holiday

Welder’s Day originated in the early 1990s, while the profession itself appeared many centuries ago. At the time of the birth of metallurgy, forging welding was used. Then came foundry and forge welding. The development of industry required constant improvement of welding processes.

An important milestone for the emergence of electric welding was the discovery in 1802 by the scientist Vasily Petrov of the effect of an electric arc. With it, a high temperature is created between two carbon electrodes, with which metal can be melted. This discovery has received practical application. In 1881-1882 N.N. Benardos and N.G. Slavyanov, independently of each other, came up with a method of connecting metal parts using welding. Thus began the electrical processing of metals. Now there are many types of welding: electric, laser, electrobeam, contact, diffusion, gas welding.

Holiday traditions

Welder’s Day is an unofficial holiday. There are no large-scale celebrations, but it is celebrated with pleasure at the factory. On this day, corporate parties are held, awards, prizes and commendable letters are awarded. The holiday is also celebrated by students, graduates and teachers of specialized educational institutions.

Interesting Facts

  • The first association of welders appeared in the XNUMXth century: specialists from St. Petersburg organized the Association for the Electrical Processing of Metals.
  • In 2009, a monument to a welder appeared in Seversk. It is located in the yard of the metal science laboratory of the Siberian Chemical Combine and is made of metal and reinforced concrete.
  • Monuments to the welder were also installed in Armavir (Krasnodar Territory), Kaluga, with. Malaya Sluda (Komi Republic), Rostov-on-Don, and in Ivanovo there is a monument to the inventor Nikolai Benardos. There are also monuments to the welder abroad: in Germany (Bremerhaven), Finland (Hyvinkää), Ukraine (Krivoy Rog) and Lugansk.
  • Welding and forging are used not only in industry, but also in art. With their help, sculptors and artists created their works, for example, Vera Mukhina and Pablo Picasso.
  • The appearance of tint colors (iridescent stains) is considered a serious defect in production. And in artistic welding, this has become a decorative technique.
  • For artistic welding, titanium and steel are most often used.
  • During electric welding, the temperature of the welding arc column reaches 8000°C.
  • Welding glow can cause corneal burns.

How to become a welder

A welder is a specialist who connects metal parts using electric welding. This is a sought-after and well-paid profession, but the working conditions are quite difficult, and even extreme. In addition, in the process of work there is a high load on vision, and inhalation of industrial dust is not very good for health.

The profession includes several specialties, depending on what kind of equipment the specialist wants to work on. Among them are press welding machines, diffusion welding installations, thermite welding, gas welding, electron beam welding installations, electric gas welding.

Those who want to become a welder go to colleges and vocational schools: they are waiting for schoolchildren after the 9th or 11th grade. Training lasts 2-3 years, depending on the chosen program.
