Planting and caring for a weeping willow
Find a lighted, spacious place for the tree. In a densely planted area, willow grows poorly, its crown will be poor. It requires a loamy soil with a high humus content. Sandy ground is not suitable, willow needs moisture. The tree will grow even on heavy soil.
It is better to propagate willow by cuttings, so it will grow faster. A shoot up to 20-30 cm long is suitable for planting. It is advisable to choose cuttings at the age of 2 years. Plant the shoot in a pot or greenhouse. After rooting in early spring, transplant the seedling to a permanent location. First, add a bucket of humus or compost to the hole, pour abundantly.
Willow is not demanding on growing conditions, but with proper care, its crown is lush and spreading. Follow these recommendations:
- Young seedlings should be watered every week. Pour 20-50 liters of water under the tree.
- Apply complex mineral fertilizers in spring and summer, feed the willow with superphosphate at the end of August.
- Low-growing willows need to be trimmed in order to form the correct crown shape.
- In a rainy summer, spots appear on the leaves of the willow. Spray the tree with copper chloride.
- In autumn, remove fallen leaves from the site, remove shoots.
Young seedlings of non-frost-resistant species need shelter for the winter.
Weeping willow in the garden will become a shelter from the scorching sun. It does not have to be planted along water bodies. With sufficient watering, you can grow a tree near your home.
