Ewa is nine months pregnant, and she and her husband have been in home isolation since the beginning of August, as they both tested positive for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the body. Even though they haven’t had symptoms for weeks, they still haven’t been relieved of their isolation. Ewa is afraid that she will give birth in the same hospital and will be isolated from the baby. We publish Ewa’s letter as part of the #coronasheredstories campaign
- Ewa and her husband reported to the infectious diseases hospital with symptoms of infection. They wanted to get tested for COVID-19 before their daughter returned from vacation
- For four weeks they have not seen their daughter, who lives with her grandparents during the quarantine of her parents. Even though Ewa and her husband have been symptom free for two weeks, they have still not been released from isolation
- Nine-month pregnant Ewa is afraid of giving birth in an identical hospital. Instead of spending the last month of pregnancy preparing for delivery, she is stressed by the still inconclusive results of COVID-19 tests
We have been in home isolation since August 1.08.2020, XNUMX, when we ourselves, after observing the symptoms, came to the infectious diseases hospital for smear samples. We checked the result on the Internet on Sunday. He was positive.
The husband had a low-grade fever, he lost his taste and smell. My symptoms started after the smears. I came home from the temperature of 38,6ºC, on the same day I lost my sense of smell and taste. We both felt uncomfortable muscle aches and a feeling of being unwell. In total, we lay and slept for three days, which is just like any other viral infection. The fever did not digest us, we felt ok, we started to function normally. We were sick for about five days.

Sanepid called us three days after the tests with the information about the quarantine. If we did not stay at home ourselves, we could do everything and be everywhere during this time of the greatest contagion. Two days before the test, my husband was normally at work and I was in classes with the children. We notified everyone we had contact with and asked to report them to the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station. We ourselves decided to take the test ourselves, because our parents were returning from holidays with our daughter and we wanted to be sure that we would not infect them with something “serious”. Now we regret it, because it turns out that getting sick is the smallest problem in all of Covid.
Interestingly, it turned out that there are positive people in the extended family – an aunt and uncle. Both in their seventies. Uncle had no symptoms, aunt stayed in bed for a few days because she was weak. They haven’t died, they haven’t been to the hospital, they’re okay. You don’t hear about such cases at all.

30 days in quarantine in the ninth month of pregnancy
The quarantine was to last until August 30, i.e. for 30 days. We could have been released sooner if two more swabs came out negative. I am 9 months pregnant, I cannot leave the house, I cannot get tested and I am mentally devastated. In an identical hospital, the pregnancy is resolved by caesarean section and the baby is isolated from the mother. Regardless of its condition. I have been and feel healthy for over two weeks, but I will be treated against my will and I will be traumatized instead of having a dream birth.
The health department orders us efficiently, due to my condition, but what if we fail to get two negative tests? Once a positive result comes out, then a negative, positive, ambiguous result. It is not known what this depends on – maybe they are downloaded poorly or give a false result.
I talked to a virologist and it turns out that a fragment of the virus deposited on the mucosa is enough, regardless of whether it is “alive” or “dead” and the result is positive. According to research, a positive patient can infect others up to six days after the onset of symptoms. In practice, we can be completely healthy after the infection is over, and we still cannot earn money, leave the house and in my case, we may lose the possibility of a normal birth and contact with our own child, because the remains of the virus are in the mucosa of the throat! And such a state may last up to 5 weeks.
«Are you sure you want to come? You can get infected in the hospital »
When I came to the HED after severe contractions, they asked at the same-name hospital if I really wanted to come. I have no symptoms and I can get infected there. And so the circle is closed, because as a person with a positive or inconclusive result, I cannot report anywhere else.
It is interesting that the health department is calling with the results, but after several requests, we still have not received an official notification by e-mail about the imposed quarantine. We also cannot see the results of the research. At the hospital, they take my word for it and don’t require you to have it with you. After all, I don’t even know if anyone is wrong and the results presented by phone are mine.
To sum up: the reporting system is ineffective, we do not have access to our own results, pregnancy is a nightmare and stress at the moment. The police, on the other hand, “pushes” around the intercom and telephone, checking if we are at home. Sometimes a different sergeant reports every 15 minutes or they call and ask where we are when we go for swabs to the drive-thru point. They should know, because the Sanepid indicates it in the system, but the police either do not see it or have no access to this data.
We haven’t seen our first child for 4 weeks, he lives with his grandparents and cries with longing. We stay at home in normal health and get nervous. We do not have the possibility of a reliable health assessment, the tests come out as they want, and we are still “sick”, it is a pity that there are no symptoms.
