Two weeks ago, the R index for Poland was 1,33 and it was the highest result since the beginning of the fourth wave in our country. Unfortunately, this trend has not stopped – the reproductive rate continues to increase. It is currently 1,37.
- The R index tells how many people are infected from one virus vector
- The situation is normalized when the reproductive rate drops below 1
- At the moment in Poland we are dealing with the rising tide of the epidemic – the R indicator has not only exceeded 1, but is also constantly growing

The R index for Poland – the latest data
The reproduction rate is considered to be one of the most reliable methods used in assessing the epidemic situation in a given area. It is assumed that when the value drops below 1, the epidemic is in retreat. On the other hand, when it is higher, it is a sign that we are on a rising wave.
In our country, the R index is systematically growing. On October 19, the record for the fourth wave and the whole of 2021 was set – the reproduction ratio was then 1,33 for the whole of Poland. Two weeks later, on October 30, the record was set again. The data provided to us by the Ministry of Health shows that on that day the average for Poland was 1,37.

The current wave of the epidemic in Poland is primarily due to the highly infectious Delta variant, but also to the resistance of part of Polish society to vaccination against the coronavirus. The highest numbers of infections are now recorded in regions where the percentage of fully vaccinated people is the lowest.
The fact that the situation in Poland is currently bad is also evidenced by the ECDC map, which is published every week, showing the course of the pandemic in Europe. For several weeks, the Lublin region has been characterized by a darker color there than other regions of our country. Currently, it is the only area in Poland that is dark red, which means that there are more than 500 infections per 100 people there. residents. Other regions of Poland are also struggling intensively with the coronavirus now. There is no longer a “green island” region in our country.

R indicator for voivodships. Where is he tallest?
The R indicator at the level of 1,37 is the average data for Poland. However, the Ministry of Health also provides values with a breakdown for all voivodeships. Two weeks ago, the highest reproductive rate was recorded in Podlasie (1,47) and the Lublin region (1,41). This corresponded to both the daily distribution of the number of infections and the data collected by ECDC.
However, the latest figures for October 30 look quite different, despite the fact that the situation does not seem to change at all. November 3 for 10 thousand. 429 infections, 1 thous. 761 fell to the Lublin region. There were more of them only in the province. Mazowieckie, which is the largest region in our country.
The data provided by the Ministry of Health show, however, that the lowest R index is currently recorded in three voivodeships of the eastern wall: Lubelskie (1,25), Podlaskie (1,27) and Podkarpackie (1,34). Only these three regions are below the national average. The remaining 13 voivodships already have an R index exceeding the record 1,37.
Taking into account the R index, we are currently dealing with the worst epidemic situation in the province. Łódź, where it is currently as much as 1,47. We also have the same value in the province. Lower Silesia. The R indicator at the level of 1,46 was recorded in the voivodship. Silesian, Opole and Lubusz Voivodeships.
The number of infections is increasing and the R index may be underestimated
When you look at the daily number of coronavirus infections in Poland, it is still difficult to wonder if the fourth wave has actually reached us. We deal with new records almost every day. And, experts say, it will get even worse.
How does all this relate to the R indicator, which is one of the most reliable sources of information about the epidemic situation? According to some experts, it is simply underestimated and in fact should be much higher. When during the third wave of the pandemic, up to 35 people were recorded. infections, the reproductive rate was 1,2.
– I think that this R indicator is higher – said prof. Andrzej Fal, head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases at the hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. -With such contagiousness, one may not go hand in hand with the other. This value is puzzling because it is radically low.
