Some experts have been emphasizing for a long time that we just have to learn to live with COVID-19. They claim that the virus will stay with us and it cannot be effectively eliminated. However, new research indicates that this may not be the case.
- The coronavirus pandemic has been going on for more than 1,5 years. Despite the invention of vaccines, new mutations continue to emerge and the world fights against waves of infection
- Some experts are of the opinion that the virus will not disappear and we will have to learn to live with it
- Scientists decided to check if nothing could be done. It turns out that the coronavirus can be completely eliminated, as can smallpox or polio

While it seemed as though we were beginning to end the pandemic when the first COVID-19 vaccine was registered, the reality was quite different. Interest in vaccinations in individual countries has turned out to be too small to talk about population immunity, in others, access to preparations against COVID-19 is still difficult to this day. Besides, the virus keeps mutating and new variants escape vaccines. Dr. Antony Fauci even said that mutations could arise that vaccines would not protect at all.
Many experts said that we must learn to live with the coronavirus, because it will stay with us forever. But a new study shows that it doesn’t have to be that way. According to an article in the British Medical Journal Global Health, complete elimination of the coronavirus is real. Scientists analyzed 17 factors that influence such a goal. These include, for example, the availability of an effective vaccine, the duration of immunity, as well as issues related to government actions or thorough testing of citizens.

So far, only smallpox and two of the three variants of polio have been completely eliminated. Scientists have estimated that getting rid of the coronavirus is also possible. Moreover, the chances of such success were determined on a scale. Analyzes show that it is more difficult than with smallpox, but easier than eliminating polio, the pandemic of which contributed to the death of children in the 50s.
Although scientists believe that the coronavirus can be completely eliminated, they are not sure if it is possible without implementing specific changes. They require, first of all, the will of politicians, financial outlays, but also educating the public so that people really understand why this goal is so important.
Several factors stand in the way of ending a pandemic. It is primarily a lack of public confidence in vaccines or “vaccine nationalism”, i.e. a situation where some countries have surplus vaccines that they do not want to pass on, while others still lack them. Of course, the problem is also the new variants of the virus, which are more and more resistant to preparations against COVID-19.
